Brake Problems

I'm considering buying a 07 G35 (I posted about getting a salvage but now I'm thinking not so much)

Anyway I've read in a few other forums/places that a common problem is brakes going out early multiple times in a row.

Is this a common problem? This is the only issue I've seen brought up multiple times in multiple places. Everyone says that's the only issue they have had with the car is the brake issues, everything else has been great.

Just wondering what other people had for experience with this.

It depends a bit on your driving style, along with the type of driving you do. I do mostly highway so when I do use my brakes, it's at higher speeds. Most of my ownership has been spent with warped front rotors. I've had them turned twice and replaced twice, all under warranty with a little back and forth with the dealer in between.
I now have brand new rotors on the car and things are great, when they warp again, I won't be going OEM.

The rotors are not high quality and do warp easily under heavy use. I haven't seen anyone with Sports complaining, maybe because the fronts are slightly larger and less prone to warpage.
It's an easy, fairly inexpensive fix and although Infiniti should be ashamed of themselves for using such sucky rotors, I wouldn't allow that one issue to prevent me from buying another one.

The car has been fantastic otherwise and I still recommend it.

I warped my stock "sport" rotors after about 20K miles. Then I bought Akebono brakes and no issues since. Stock rotors are weak. Good for daily driving, not so much for aggressive / track duty.

Knowing Nissan in general, it's really not the rotors but the pads. They transfer an oddly high amount of pad material unevenly to the rotor -- even moreso after a hot streak then standing on the brakes for any extended period of time (i.e. stopped at a light). Long story short, the end result is a warped rotor feel.

I've had Nissan's for most of my driving life and it almost always goes back to the pads being the culprit.

YMMV, of course

I only heard that the 1st gens have that break problem. The 2nd gens, they fixed that problem. That's only what i heard. For me, i never had a problem w/ my breaks and i drive an 08, around town and freeway. My driving is on the aggressive side. But very soon i am going to up grade my breaks to akebono's some time next month or in January. They always say bigger is better.

Just find the G you like and buy it. If you happen to experience the warped rotor syndrome either have them replaced under warranty (if applicable) or pay to replace them with aftermarket. Brakes are cheap, parts wise relative to other things that can go wrong. This small issue that could creep up should NOT influence you on whether you should buy the car or not.

I have not had any problems. I bought the car CPO and I have all the service records from the one dealer that did all the service on the car (guy was religious about only going to the one dealer). I am almost 100% sure I am on original front brakes and pads and am at 43,000 miles.

Many of these newer cars are having this issue. I am not sure why but some Lexus vehicles 2006+ also have a problem with brakes/rotors going early.

However this car tends to eat brakes pretty fast. I personally have had my front rotors replaced at 28k when I bought the car.

It is slightly rediculous considering my 98 GS400 had its rotors last untill 145k miles. They were resurfaced one time. I also had a 96 maxima that had its original pads on it until like 90k miles. No issue with rotors.

The dealer gives you some BS about this being a performance car ect. The problem with that excuse is that this car cant Stop like a Porsche or Ferrari, and they want you to believe it does. Nissan has CRAP brakes.

But you can find aftermarket support for pads and rotors that are relatively cheap and better quality than OEM.

For example I just changed all 4 rotors/pads on my GF 2005 G35x for $300 bucks in parts.

The brakes can be easily upgraded on this car so if that is your only worry then get the car.

Thank you for all the responses.

While I have no experience replacing/upgrading brakes/rotors, I'm sure I could find someone on the forum who lives near me that wouldn't mind giving me a helping hand.

In fact I'll probably do the same for my grandfathers 04 G35 next time the brakes go. Sadly, while I was away his brakes went a few months back and without telling me he went right to the dealership who
-replaced rear pads and machine rotors $204
-parts $75
-replace front pads and replace front rotors $204
-parts: disc brake $75
-parts: rotor disc brake $269

TOTAL: 827 + tax.

This was done 7,000 miles ago and the last few day's I've noticed that the brakes are working fine but are squeeling a lot. I plan on taking it back to Infiniti for my grandfather and making them look at it. (The fronts also produce a TON of brake dust. After 2 week the front rims are black)

Anyway, good to know about the newer G35 V36.

Now I just gotta find one with GPS and <40,000 miles for $20,000 or less. Gonna be a tough search.

Yeah Nissan does suck when it comes to brakes. I had a brand new 02 Maxima, 04 Titan, 04 G35. Titan was the worst with brake issues that Nissan acknowledge was bad, seems like the used the Frontier's Rotor on the Titan.

Outside of Brake dust on G35 I really didn't have much problems. Premature wear, fixed under warranty. I did however like how my 04G35 stopped on a dime just like my current 07G35S stops on a dime, I think that's a small price to pay for increased brake dust.

Anywayz good luck in your quest in finding the perfect G for you. I recommend expanding you online search, even if you don't plan to travel very far to get one, at least you'll be able to see different prices for similarily equipped G35 to aid you in a price range to shoot for.

Thanks for the info.

I agree on the brake dust, I was just bringing it up because I didn't know if there was some significance or showed signs of a problem. I wash his G35 every 2 weeks anyway so I don't mind the brake dust.

I'm actually totally fine with traveling far to get the right G35. I'd probably be cool with going halfway across the country to get it, and I've been doing tons of online research on it.

Main thing I have found so far is that SO many of the 07's don't come with GPs. what is WRONG with people? There is this MASSIVE screen, why wouldn't you get gps? So frustrating.

anyway, thanks for the info
