DIY: Sunroof fix for excessive wind noise when OPENED

For those that are bothered by the excessive wind noise when your SR is open;
Try this......

With the roof open, reach up & push the wind deflector down into it's 'home' position.
You'll find that the wind noise is drastically reduced!

When I got home I looked at finding a way to keep it locked down in 'home' position.
On closer scrutiny, I found that it was very easy to just remove it.

So for those that want to give it a try... here are a couple of DIY pics

All it takes is the removal of the spring on each side of the Sunroof.
Then it just slides out.

My wife & I can actually enjoy a conversation well up to 100 km/hr (60 mph)

...just a note on re-installing.
It's basically the opposite procedure....
BUT, the back pivot point can get stuck in a hole as you slide it back in.
To avoid this, keep the entry angle shallow to let it get all the way through.

I never liked the extra noise, but that "wind deflector" keeps light rain out as long as you're moving over 30mph...

that's weird, isnt' the deflector supposed to make it less noisy? Any side affects from doing this? I.E. water leaking in etc?

It tells you so in the manual!

It's not there so you can open your sunroof while it's raining outside, more than it's there for people who like opening the sunroof all the time... if it starts raining, we'll see the rain before the it starts coming in through the sunroof...

The defelector is to keep the rear passengers from getting wind in their face.

That may be, but I didn't notice any extra air flow coming in.

put your hand up right behind the sunroof with the deflector up and down; you'll see a major difference.

With the deflector off, it still makes quite a bit of noise and alot of wind comes into the car. I found it to be the quietest when the deflector is halfway up. (Do this by opening roof, and while driving reach up and slowly adjust height of deflector with hand.) I cut the metal limiters and re-bent to original shape thus only allowing the deflector to go halfway up. I find it tolerable now, and no wind coming into the car like it does without the deflector.

Still: My buddy has a BMW and there is no wind noise when the sunroof is open.

Yes the BMW has a deflector.
The sunroof is designed in a way that it makes no noise.

I guess you need to pay 10k more for luxury features that actually have a little thought put into them. Opposed to a Nissan with a big badge trying to compete with luxury car companies (Ie. BMW, MBZ, Lexus.)
