DIY: Clean your throttle bodies

Well, if you don't then TB cleaning is not really necessary, so the first dealer was really trying to screw you over doing something you don't need. As for the second dealer, if they said they don't recommend it then they're wrong as well.
I'd recommend doing it if you're having idle issues as a result of dirty TB's. Otherwise, it's not really worth cleaning them as part of any preventative maintenance or anything.

Man my car was idling really funny today while I was looking for a parking space.
It felt like it was going to switch off twice , I cleaned my TBs like 3-4 months back before installing the Stillen Filters. I need to take a look at them and see if they need cleaning. Might as well check the Airfilter at the same time to see if it needs cleaning too.
or maybe I just got crappy petrol this time around

If you are having idle or startup problems then you have to make sure the TB is clean. The person who said the TB doesn't need to be cleaned is wrong.

So I was planning on doing this but I have very little experience with anything like this. If I dont disconnect the electric thing, will I not have to do the relearn thing? I dont want to have to do anything except take some stuff apart, any further than that I will mess something up I know it haha.

Thanks just did it, what a pain in the butt those screws are on the coupes. So badly placed haha. I burnt the fawk out of my hand when I put it on the engine cause it was the sun too. Oh well all clean now! Thanks for this thread!!

Just thought I'd add that cleaning only the part of the throttle bodies that contacts the butterfly valves with dry lint free cloths from Walmart has fixed the low idle issues I started having around 60k with the latest ECU update. Haven't done any re-learning yet either.
I followed a slightly different procedure that didn't require me to force the valves open by hand or disconnect the bodies from the plenum. Not as thorough a cleaning, but it felt safer and was still effective.

Thanks a lot for this DIY, my dealer failed miserably at troubleshooting this.

Cleaned my throttle bodies today and everything went well. I just hit 50k miles this week so they were pretty dirty. I did not disconnect anything but am having some issues. The car idles great right at 800 rpms. The problem I have is that the throttle response is about 1 second behind. If I am going 30 mph in 3rd and let off the gas it takes 1 sec for the car to back off and jerks noticable hard. Another example would be reving up the car in neutral up to 3k rpms and then letting off the gas. The car will continue to idle at 3k rpms for 1 sec or two and then drop down to 1200 rpms for a sec before dropping back down and staying at 800 rpms..... weird. I went through all the step to reset the idle but I'm not having any luck. Not sure if this is what caused this but when I was cleaning the throttle bodies I pushed the butterflies open slightly to clean them. Could someone who has gone through the three steps of the idle air volume learning let me know what noise you're supposed to hear when doing step 2, throttle valve closed position? I didn't hear anything so maybe this is where I'm getting stuck. Thanks in adavance
