There are two pieces in each cat. The material in front of the o2 sensor is ceramic, and the material behind the o2 sensor is metal. you can only punch out the ceramic material...i guess making it a 1/2 cat.
when i found this out, i just bought test pipes. to remove the metal material, you would have to cut the cat open and reweld it back together afterwards

No loss in power at all, if anything you do get a slight gain but the noise is really where its at. I think I am going to wait until after winter for the K&Ns tho. They will be starting to salt around here and the dust can be easily sucked up by less restrictive filters.
