OBD-II: which protocol do we use?
OBD-II: which protocol do we use?
Hey guys,
My buddy has an 04 Audi, he got a CEL. So I come to the rescue with my OBD-II reader and guess what, I get "error connecting".
I told him it must be a $hitty German engineering thing, worked fine before on my cars.
After some research, I find protocols changed over the years. He used another reader, that found the code, and said it used "Protocol: Keyword 2000".
Then I read somewhere that all cars 2008+up model years have to use some CAN protocol.
Question is:
What protocol do our 08+ G's use so I know when shopping for a reader?
What brands/models OBD2 readers have you used in your cars?
Thanks guys!

if you drive an 08, and an engine light comes on, why would you want to read it yourself? its warranty, most likely.
the aftermarket will catch up, eventually.
pep boys, autozone, etc can read codes for free. see if theirs can talk to it.

I'm almost sure a 08 G uses CAN protocall. I wouldn't buy an OBDII reader that couldn't read CAN as most makers are converting it over to CAN at some point soon (if not already)
