Tranny Drain and Fill, 4.7 quarts needed.

Guys,

I just did a tranny drain and fill after some searches on here. Mostly V35 Coupe and Sedans were saying they got about 3.1 quarts out while just draining the pan. I had a feeling but made the mistake of buying 4 Quarts of Matic S(J) rather than 5 Quarts while at the Dealer and drained it to find out about 4.7 quarts was drained from the pan. Luckily I was just a hop and a skip away and picked up another quart before moving the car. I have about 41k miles and decided to do it just to be on the safe side since I have took it on the track a couple of times. It may be just mental but I do notice smoother shifts during acceleration. Hope this may help anyone.

Allan

The S is better than the J. Maybe you feel that.

How long did it take you to do the whole tranny flush and fill up? How hard is it?
Tire Plus wants to charge me $128 for labor just to do the tranny fluid.

Well there's more than 4.7 Quarts of Fluid in the Tranny, IIRC about 11-12 quarts. To drain the pan and fill it up it couldn't have taken me more than 30 mins, most of the time was spent waiting for the fluid to drain. Remove Dip Stick, Jack up the car, Unbolt the drain bolt, Drain, Tighten drain bolt and refill. What you should do is find out exactly what their "flush" really consist of. Do they simple Drain and Fill it or do they use a machine to actually flush all the old fluid out? You should only use Matic S(J) in your tranny which your local dealer may charge $10-14 per quart. Don't let them put anything else. Let me know if you have any other questions.

From my understanding, Infiniti will only warranty our transmissions if the fluid we have in it meet or exceeds the fluid intended for our transmissions. You can go with a fluid that meets or exceeds Matic S(J) but if you do, make sure its not mixed and all of the 12 quarts in your transmission is completely drained before filling it with something else.

wow, I didn't know that. Then how can they tell what we put in the tranny? On our side, how can we tell if normal full synthetic transmission fluid like Castrol or Mobile exceed the "Infiniti standard" ?

^ I know in the manual it says "DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN NISSAN J-MATIC TRANS FLUID" so I think if your tranny dies, they can blame it on any fluid you put in if it's not their fluid.. but I may be wrong?

Wouldn't that set off some sensors? which would lead to a trip to the dealership?

this is how you do a correct flush.. you drain X quarts add X quarts, drain X quarts, add X quarts until you've done all 14

do NOT use matic S for the 6MT, it is the wrong fluid. You want to use 75w85 API GL4 gear lube for the transmission. If you use 75w90, you will notice a difference in shifting (takes longer to go into gear). The only 75w85 that know is readily available is the OEM Nissan HQ-Multi 75w85, available through the dealer.
