I backed over a gas storage tank (stuck up a couple of inches) cap at the gas station last night, and it appears that I have damaged the right catalytic convertor on my 2008 G35 sedan. I looked under the car and the convertor is bent down somewhat and when running, I can feel an exhaust leak. The car's exhaust sounds like some 16 year old trying to make his honda civic sound neat. Not exactly my style. Since i have roughly a year left on my lease and don't have intentions of buying the car, I am looking at the cheapest way to get the exhaust repaired. I would like to buy a used cat converter (stock,oem), but have read that in some states that is illegal. Another option that may be cheaper that buying a new OEM converter is to buy a pair of Berk or Kinetix converters. I have turned in lease cars before with Infiniti and can't imagine that they would notice or complain, but any feedback would be appreciated.

 

I would think your comprehensive insurance coverage would take care of that. It's like hitting a dog or getting a stone break in your windscreen. Most comprehensive deductibles are less than $100 so go for it.


And don't worry about filing a claim, it won't raise your payments because it doesn't count against you.

check the marketplace (oh wait, the marketplace sucks now) for someone selling their stock cats. you'll be fine replacing a stock cat with another stock cat.

Check you policy again. Your Collision deductible may be 500 but your comprehensive may be allot lower. My collision is 200 and my comprehensive is 50. If yours is 500, you need to find a new insurance company. I changed from a 200 to a 50 and it didn't add much to my premium.

 

Plus, it seems like you might have a real claim against the gas station. At the very least your insurance company should subrogate against the station to see what they could get back. In the end, it may work out that you owe nothing.

My deductible is $500, I doubled checked my policy earlier. When I saw the storage tank caps, they didn't look high enough to worry about. My car has no mods at all. I may give my agent a call in the morning, but I'm pretty sure that I would be out my deductible and possibly have my rates increased (depends on whether the incident is considered a collision or comprehensive claim). My deductible is the same.
I think my best bet at this time is to find some stock cats that someone has pulled off of their car.

 

My agent said it would be a collision claim. I am at a muffler shop to see what they can do.

 

Sounds like the gas station is liable.

 

The muffler shop fixed the leak. Luckily the catalytic converter was damaged, but the rear flange was bent, causing a leak. The shop first tried to just put in a new gasket but that didn't do the trick. Next they cut off the rear flange, welded on a new one, and the leak was fixed. All for $50. Shout out to All Star Muffler on 1488, just north of The Woodlands.
