Smile Differential Fluid Change and Warranty concern

Hi guys,

I am at the point thinking about changing the rear differential fluid in my 07 g35s with 33k. My infiniti dealer (charlotte) suggested a price at $139 with oem fluid. I called around both nissan and some mechanics I know, they suggested an even higher price tag. Does anyone near Charlotte are know any good place to get this done cheaper and as good?

Upon my readings in the form that it seems rather doable to change the fluid by oneself. I only need another set of jackstands (35), fluid itself (20?), and washer (dealer should have it, right?), and a pump with 1-2 hours time it should be done.

My concerns is if I change it myself, will this void any warranty on the differential?

Thanks.

Thanks Austin. I got different responses towards the change intervals. Some say 30k is the first mark, others, as you suggested 60k. I don't know when should be a good time to this actually. Any thoughts?

Also, I have all the tools but am afraid of jacking the car up in the air. If I understand correctly, I will actually use the differential joint as the jack point, right? And will further use jack stands to keep the car in the air.

Yes, I saw my 33k tranny fluid too. It's dark. However, I read somewhere ppl are saying this even 3-4k in a new tranny fluid would get dirty as well. :P

^ hmm I never heard of that... My fluid at 39k came out Red with a little dark tint but it was not "Dark" ATF I believe turns black from being overheated which is bad if that's happening.

Its the 5AT you have in your car right? Since its the same as mine, IIRC

oh and yea just keep the receipts that you bought the fluids.ect

I also did my Diff at 39k.

Haven't done mine yet but was planning to do both the tranny and the differential at around 60 to 65,000 kilomtres which is around 38 to 40,000 miles.

I agree. Mine was not "Dark" Dark, but just not pure red. Plus it's clear meaning there wasn't metals or anything like that.

Yes, I have a 5AT, so I am going to change the differential soon, probably with my next engine oil change. I will keep the receipts, I still think 140+tax for a diff change is a bit steep. It's only 15 mins job, right??

Awesome, you going to DIY? I just started to thinking about this when my dealer was like "Hey, your diff need to be changed." :P

Atf comes out dark because the clutches get worn out.

There are some brief descriptions in the forum, if you search you should be able to find it.

In summary, from what I learnt, it contain the follows steps:
1. Jack up G on four jackstands on a level ground.
2. identify the rear differential case, the big silver located in the back (If you are AWD, you should have one up front too)
3. Use a 10mm hex to loose the fill plug first, which should on the top to the right.
4. Use the same 10mm hex to loose the drain plug, which is on the bottom.
5. Let it rain...
6. Clean the drain plug, inspect its wear, change washer if needed. But some say not necessary. Put it back on. Not tighten it just yet.
7. Use a pump to put new fluid back into the case. Fill until some fluid comes out of the fill hole.
8. Wrap clean the fill hole, put the plugs back in there.
9. tighten both plugs to 25 lb/in (right?)

You are done. The whole thing should be rather easy. The only difficulty for me is actually to jack up the car. I don't want to damage any part.

Sears sells the jack stands for $20 the pair.

My diff took 1.5 quarts of mobil 1, so it cost me maybe $16 of fluid. I reused the drain plug washers with no issue at all. Pump was 10 for the type that screws onto the bottle at advanced auto.

Took me 15 mins to do....was easy
