overheated Berk's HFC?

it seems like my car is loosing power after some really spirited driving (when it's extremely hot), and exhaust noise changes too (it becomes more "softer").

so, I guess, maybe it's Berk's HFC dying? some time ago both gaskets on them were burned and I changed them to the metallic rings and when mechanics looked inside of the cats they saw some deformation of the metallic web inside, though not very bad (to their opinion).

How long have you had them on for? I was reading threads on how some go bad after 2 years

^ whs, iv seen a few berks die pretty quickly recently.

i have them for about year and a half

are there any other reasons for my car to loose power after the spirited driving? :(

Replied to your post here ----> https://g35driver.com/forums/media-s...ars-old-2.html

some guy tell me it could be borderline limp mode, so the hotter the car gets past the threshold, the more it cuts power! it seems to be logical, as my technician says HFC's could make some power loss if they are melted inside, but I would feel it even on the cold car...

Defratos Jul 13, 2011 06:20 AM

Yeah that could be the reason, I would say the only way to really find out is to take 'em out and see what's going on inside the cats.

Hope you figure the problem out

Couldn't wait no more (yes, I'm car fanatic) - quit working and took the car to the service station. Right now mechanics disassembling my exhaust to look inside of the cats ;)

Sounds like its time for test pipes. Check your muffler for clogs, I've heard of hfcs turning into lumps of coal and that jamming up inthe muffler.

it beleive only stock ceramic cats can dissamble in this way and jam the muffler

anyway, mechanic looked at my Berks and he thinks they are good. a little bit melted, but clean.

so, it might be "pre-limp" mode, when i overheat my car...

The Uprev guys told me they've seen of cars come in with with HFCs turned to char-coal, and it comes loose and jams in the muffler. I think it's more common of an issue on forced induction applications tho!

Did you not see the pics in my thread? ----> https://g35driver.com/forums/media-s...years-old.html

and these are Berks HFCs not OEM, and both cats on mine had dislodged and turned to bricks

∧ You are Correct sir

djfarhan Jul 13, 2011 09:16 PM

do berks die faster than FI?

harp00n Jul 14, 2011 03:14 AM

anyway, mechanic showed me the photos of inside of my Berks and they seem to be in good shape, a little bit displaced, but it surely let's the fumes to go free (was lighting it from the one side to see the light from the other)!

so, it was just "pre-limp" mode, so now I'm gonna fight with it (remove upper engine cover and drill some holes in my fiberglass undercover)...
