What do you mean by restart. I have the same issue and I am trying to fix car has 84k miles right now

Lost reverse

Having same issue as other. Car drives perfect except reverse. Have to rev up quickly to 2krpm just to get it to catch for split second and jolt back for split second. No one has followed up so what’s the deal??

i assume no check engine light? found some links below that range from a solenoid issue to a snap ring flying off that requires the trans R&R. assume your trans fluid is in good condition/level also.

..replaced rev/high clutch solenoid . car works perfect now only thing can think of was small amount of dirt in solenoid feed hole or solenoid not working correctly.

RE5R05A Transmission Improved Double Wide High Tension Reverse Brake Snap Ring Fits 4 Speed Nissan RE5R05A Jatco 5 Speed Rear Wheel Drive & 4WD The factory original snap ring is very thing and narrow. The groove depth in the case is only about .050" so the snap ring has little to no support against "dishing", and can pop out of the case very easily. There is a machining step in the case above the snap ring groove where the ring will then catch. When this happens the retainer can rotate over the top of the piston lugs preventing the piston from applying the clutch, causing no reverse and damage to the piston/retainer.

A few of us have had this problem including myself and @jsexton . In both of our cases there was a broken snap ring inside the tranny for the reverse clutches. Jsexton also broke a reverse solenoid. Some other folks have had this issue too.

Details here: Auto Tranny Slipping in Reverse Only

Unfortunately, you may be looking at a full transmission rebuild in your near future.

Fluid was a little contaminated but not low. There is kind of a slight grinding noise when in reverse and about 1200 rpm’s. Thinking it’s that snap ring because it’ll jolt when blipping the throttle and then act as if in neutral when not on gas and then that rotating slight grind noise can be heard. So about this snap ring does it require full rebuild if not fixed asap? Or what are my options? Thanks again! A bunch.

if it is that snap ring, that would require a full R&R. you're better off just getting a low(er) mileage used trans.

Anyone know of a 5speed auto trans that will fit an 08 g37 coupe RWD?

check car-part.com and it should find interchange units. you may want to stick to the same make/model of your G, since the TCM logic (shifts rpm, etc.) may be different on other models. 07-08 sedans may work, but don't quote me on that.

Not all G35s have the same TCM so be careful. Do your research on which type you have as there are 2 or 3 for this transmission. Check local for used one and also get a quote from a transmission shop and see if it's better to 'risk it' or is it better to just rebuild it and not have to worry about "when will it start sliping on me again!!"?
