It does get pretty annoying but after awhile you get used to it, works well if driving half asleep, wakes you up as you get close.

-Pull down on the shifter boots plastic aluminum looking ring below the shift ****.
-put car in neutral
-pull the retaining clip off of the shift ****. pull straight back on it.
-remove shift ****
-get a suitable tool to get underneath the piece of console surrounding the shifter. the side that fits against the cup holder portion is best
-pry it up from the front, then the sides
-pull the console peice up a few inches and pull out straight towards the back of the car. it will pull out of the center dash portion
-unplug electrical connections and its yours to mess with.
