So what's the history of the Infiniti / Nissans Auto transmissions (with lock shift feature). Some of the earlier model Q45 had major issues.
The last Nissan i owed was in 1988 (lol)

anyone else able to explain the paddle shifters and DS vs. M mode? The dealer said the car always shifts on its own at a certain point - is that true for M mode? I thought the purpose of M mode was that the driver has to make all shifts.

Just wanted to clarify. Thanks!

If you are in manual mode, whether it be using the paddles or the shifter, it will only shift when you want it to. It will not shift on it's own in manual mode.

I have noticed if your in M mode, the car will automatically shift to first gear if you come to a stop. I also noticed that you can use the paddles when the car is in D mode, but it will go back into D mode after a certain amount of time if you don't shift with the paddles.

Yes - M mode will also shift down to 3rd once you reach a certain speed (think it's ~20). But as said, it will not shift up for you, even if you're bouncing off the limiter.

1000 times, wow you think the transmission is built for all that shifting?

I've yet to use DS mode. I haven't really done much heavy spirited driving.

Just to clarify....in DS mode the shifter will shift on his own at a certain point...I know the manual mode does, I just want to make sure the DS mode you have the option of shifting on the fly + or - with the shifter or just leave in DS and it shift automatically at certain RPM.

Thanks,
gpogi

Does DS mode improve the 0-60 time over Auto? i.e. from a full stop will the car launch noticeably quicker if I put it in DS?

The Manual mode would not upshift for you, however it would down shift to 1 when you stop and also downshift a gear if rpm drops to a point where you will stall the engine.

Just to clarify, when you move the lever over to pop it into DS, you're operating in Drive Sport mode, which is still full auto. If you then tap-up or down on the shifter or hit a paddle, you're in Manual mode, which shows the gear number. The only way back to DS (I think), is to toggle over to D, then back to DS.

Yes that is correct.. Does this locking thing have anything to do with my car stumbling all over it self at 2k and 75-100% of WOT from a stop on low roll..
