Hide a key

I am new to this forum and am 3 days into owning a slightly used (8k mile) 08 G35s with premium and tech. packages. It’s the first time in my life I have bought something over $500 and NOT had buyers remorse.

Ok so I searched the forums on having a hide a key/ spare key etc... and found nothing so I thought I would post my solution. (please let me know if there is any issue with this outside of what I, a tech and the sales person can see)

I know many hate having a hide a key but between my wife and I we seem to loose keys and we needed a fix as quite often I find myself hundreds of miles from home and a spare.

-I bought another key FOB and took the battery out and am leaving it in my glove box.
-took a valet key and put it in a magnetic "hide a key"

With the battery out the RF doesn't transmit so you can lock your doors etc... You can take the no battery FOB and put it in the port under the trunk release which powers the "dead" key and you’re able to start the car.

I know it’s a pricey solution but cheaper and more convenient than the alternative.

Thoughts???

Any time you hide a key in or on the car, you risk enabling a theft rather than
just a break-in. Hard to explain to an insurance company that thieves drove
your car away because you left a fob in the glove compartment or a magnet
box. You can't assume that they won't find it or figure out how to use it.

You also have to look at how likely it is that you'll be without a key. Because
the I-key can stay in your pocket all the time, you should be less likely to
lose it, right? I've been using mine for almost 3 1/2 years ('05) and have yet
to lock myself out - it's not something I even think about.

well stated....I do agree to a point- (nothing below is meant to be smart ahrse...)

locking my key in the car is not the issue its loosing them... I work in scrubs all day which don't have good pockets to put anything in or have holes in the pockets and since I drive all over the state I am often far from my spare key at home. (I have had keys fall out of my pocket 4-5 times and lost 2 in the last 3-4 years and no I don't have a locker available to me in the different facilities. Anything I don't have in my pocket would have to be left in plain site in the dressing room)

If you do a good job of hiding the key I have a hard time believing someone is going to look for it never mind find it and why would I tell my insurance company in the unlikely event that it did happen?

I am sure I am the minority but my job keeps me constantly moving and thinking which leaves little room for my pea sized brain to focus on a key. What solution would you suggest?...short of not loosing my keys so far from home.

Sounds well thought out....
I think I'd find a less obvious spot for the FOB though.

I know what you mean about the pockets on scrubs. I used to hang the i-key around my neck using an ID badge holder.

Physical key lets you get into the car if the i-key battery dies. You can then start the car using the i-key port.

im sure you can come up with better things to do with your key. I personally wouldnt trust it near the car...if anyone sees u hiding it, they will take ur car.

cant you hang your key on ur scubs? on a hanging tie string or something?

Um, can't someone just take your fob, put a battery in it and start your car?

I understand your dilemma but I'm not sure I would put the fob anywhere in the car.

I will say that the fob has a poor design flaw that probably adds to your frustration. There really is no way to hang the key anywhere if you take out the mechanical key. Where this is the biggest problem is when you valet park. If you take the valet key out and lock your glove compartment, the valet has no way to hang the key on their hooks, or to attached the ticket.

It's just a rock at that point.

Not exactly what you were talking about but if you do separate the key from the fob you definitely have a great chance of losing it since you can't connect it to anything.

c'mon man.....

the simple answer to your problem was posted above by a couple of people,

just learn to hang your key on your neck/body via some sort of attachment/necklace/pouch etc.... and thats it.

just like you remember to put on pants in the morning....you will learn to include this as part of your daily routine....

repeat after me:

1. Wake up
2. Shower
3. put pants on
4. put key on
5. leave the house

just having fun :-)

A better place to hide the fob is in the back seat arm rest side pouch. I see no problems with hiding a key under your car and agree a thief will not take the time to look around for a key unless they see you doing the same.

How is the OP going to get the hidden key then? Break into his own car?
