G35x in Snow - Minor problems

Sup guys! Haven't started a thread in awhile and well I just came across a small problem with my 2008 G35x.

Outside temperature and environment -
Salt Lake City, Utah @ 31*F - Car prompts "ICY".
First snow storm in a while - floors are rather icy.

Car - completely stock

Problems:
1. My all-seasons seem to be extremely hard.
2. My car slipped multiple times putting me into a "fish tail" type of movement. I was at around 35 MPH.

Can anyone share some light on what is going on? Also can someone explain to me what is the deal with the "snow mode" on the cars? Thanks for all the help.

You could always swap to dedicated winter tires. But wide 17" & 18" all season tires are not going to perform well in the snow. I have to climb a big hill to get to my driveway. If my Xs can't make it up the hill in the snow, my 02 WRX was great, If I ever buy another G I will not bother with AWD.

Well all seasons aren't going to be very good, if you want it to be awesome in the snow you need snow tires/ winter tires. No matter what car you have, unless you have studded tires you're going to slip on ice. Our cars are rear bias AWD which means it's going to be awd until there is slip, that is why you are going to fish tail. huge snow storm up in Wisconsin, so i went out experimenting. Our cars only fish tail if you hit the gas while making a corner, or you're going into the corner way too fast, but the VDC and the awd catches the fish tail rather fast, just let off the pedal and the car will straighten back out.

I have a huge hill where I'm at and I had 0 problems making it up the hill with 6-8 inches on snow. No idea why you can't make it up your driveway.

On another note, I found it easier to drive the car with the VDC off in the snow, as long as i was watching my throttle input, I found it easier because i never get robbed of power when I'm slipping. No idea just me.

Snow mode changes the power into a 50/50 split, thus increases traction when you take off from a stand-still. It disables after 20kph (not sure on the exact speed).

You need to buy yourself snow tires. Even though your G has AWD, it doesn't mean you're invincible in snow. Snow tires make a huge difference and trust me you will see the difference once put on.

I have Yokahoma Ice Guard's on my G35x and have been ripping through snow with ease. Last years winter with the stock all-season's on wasn't too bad, but after this year and onwards I'm always going to put on snow tires.

Thanks for all the help guys! I was thinking about purchasing snow tires but in about a month I'll be giving my G35 to my parents back in my home state and we don't need snow tires there so yeah.

I will try and take it easy on the snow... bleh I was scared x_x

to my knowledge, if you put snow mode on, it KEEP it 50/50, as opposed to going RWD under good con ditions.

I'm running Blizzak WS60's on my RWD G35S and I honestly think it runs better than my wife's MDX in the snow. However, we haven't had anything REALLY significant yet.

I noticed that the stock RS-A's on mine were crap in the cold.... hockey pucks.
I'm running 17" Blizzak WS-50's on dedicated winter wheels now and my winter driving is more enjoyable than I ever expected it to be.
The car is a dream in the snow, but not on those crap-years

I beleive the snow button ensures that the power is 50/50 front/rear until 12 mph (or 20 kph). This has been listed in other threads (I would assume it is in the manual too, but I have never actaully looked for it in mine)

Don't know it hasn't snow yet. But my 02 WRX Wagon with all season rarely had any troubles. Only time I used to have problems would be on days when we got 5+ inches of snow. But that car was a mountain goat.

But like I said If the Xs has a lot trouble I will not bother with AWD if ever buy another G.

Thanks hopefully, I will not have any problems either. Thanks for the VDC tip.
