reason for jerk when going from park to reverse?

Guess this is where I post this? Been searching the board lately for the reason why I get a jerk going from park to reverse and found 1 topic bout it but nobody really had an answer.

So does anybody have an answer that explains this? Always happens in the morning but I give it about 3 to 4 min to drop the rpms but it still does it. And I'm in socal so its for sure not that cold here. Sometimes it does it durring the day too if the car is off all day but even then I give it 3 min to warm up. Would really like an answer just cus I'm startin to get worried its something serious.

Thx for any input

Oh and edit: I've got 07 sedan 5at

I posted this in another thread, it works for my FX, TL and my buddy's G...

"^ if all you have is a lurch/jerk when you put in Reverse and it drives fine otherwise in D and evn R after engaging then you probably dont have a bad tranny and if its what i think it is then its pretty normal and happens in almost all cars(my TL-S and FX do that when cold).

Here's a little trick to lessen the lurch, after about a minute of warming up the car, holding down the shifter button/clutch move the shifter halfway to 'R' (but not all the way into R) you'll notice the rpm increase for a second and then quickly drop, then put it back to 'P'. Then you can simply shift to R with little to no 'lurch'.

lemme know if it works"

I tried this, and it worked, but my rpm actually drops instead of increasing once the shifter moves halfway to R.

Not sure the reason for this jerk though. It's not like I park on a hill and not engage the emergency brake.

i had a 2001 infiniti qx4 that did this. My moms odyssey does this also.

Best way to avoid the jerk is after starting up go from park to N let it sit there for few seconds then put it in D.or R

Thx for the suggestion, glad im not the only one. Going halfway to reverse and going to neutral first both prevent the jerk and it has been jerking less frequently as well so im happy.

This is Exactly what is do,, especially on a cold start engine revs high, (hate this) but i think its emissions and getting cats hot so they work better, Park to neutral, will drop rpms in my car almost a 1000, then its not to bad selecting gear you want.

could it be that the transmission is not warmed up yet? I bet it's going to be more noticeable if you're in Winter. Just make sure your car stops completely when switching gears.... you don't want to ruin your tranny...

Any more info on this, just picked up an 05 maxima for the wife. It's doing this. But it will do it even with a warm motor.

The car starts at high rpm so it can warm the engine down before you start to drive it. This is normal and it jurks because its going to R at higher rpm then it normally would in idel. Do what others have suggested and put it half way to r so the rpm drops then it switchs to R or just wait much longer for the engine to warm up.

MIne just did the big jerk from P to R this morning.I didn't believe what was happening, so I put it back into P and tried it again, same big jerk and then the 'Service Engine Soon' light was on. I decided to turn the car off. Then it wouldn't start at all - nothing, no click, to cranking, no nothing other than the door chime. AAA towed it to the mechanic and we'll see what happens. Grrrr.....it does have 153,000 miles but it was running like a champ, especially the tranny.
