wiring issue

I'm attempting to remove my cigarette lighter to install a usb cable. I did my research as to how to properly do it but it's just not working. Theirs 3 wires that was connected to the lighter a pinkish, tannish and black wire. I stripped my usb cable and exposed the red and black wires. I knew black was the ground wire but for the life of me I can't find the power wire, I've attached the red usb wire to both wires and still I have no charge. Does anyone know what to do from here?

Start by not hooking wires together that shouldn't be! Hopefully I misread, perhaps you have tried each individually.

Do you have a multimeter?

Check the three wires with the key in the acc position. Find the one that is 12v with the other multimeter lead on a ground somewhere. Hook the 12v wire to your usb red wire. (I'm assuming this device is designed to step 12vdc down to 5vdc for usb).

Hook the usb adapter's black wire to a source of ground. Done

Ok, so I found the positive and negative wires. Issue I'm having now is that the phone still isn't charging. I assumed I blew a fuse, I changed the correct one but it still isn't working??

If you saw 12v with a multimeter you didn't blow a fuse. If you don't have a multimeter check the fuse at the drivers kick panel

Oh you checked the fuse already... Verify that you are actually seeing 12v with a multimeter from harbor freight or something. Does the device work in general?

Yes the USB cord works I tested it before I spliced it. So I'm assuming that I can't use the cigarette lighter as a power source for the cord if it's a 12v?

So I did some research, if I buy the converter step down module 12V to 5V I can connect my USB cord to that and connect the other end to the cigarette outlet??

I use the same one as Yosip pictured, it sits practically flush with the cigarette lighter which is nice.

yeah same as what everyone has been saying, phones charge via 5v. you need a 12v to 5v converter. not sure why you tried to spliced your usb cable directly to 12v. usb is always 5v..

I don't know where the OP did his research but perhaps it was on another planet?
