Do some research like the rest of us did. There are tons of stuff out there. Asking what the "best aftermarket bulbs" for the headlights is like asking if we prefer to have scrammbled eggs, or sunny side up. Since you are asking, I kie both.

I never really found whether they were actually helpful with vision or more strictly an aesthetic upgrade. most people move to the white / purple-ish color but that color actually produces less lumens so I've always wondered how it works out.

I threw in some 6000k's from ebay and while I love the color, its pretty dramatic at the loss of light on the ground compared to the stocks.

You know it's funny, I was wondering the same thing...What's a good (popular) replacement HID (what rating).

What brand is best?

My opinion is stay with the stockers. I had a 6000K HID kit on my Tahoe and the light difference between those and the stock ones on the G35 is noticeable.

I have the Phillips 6k HIDs in mine; IMO, I think they are better. However, I am not an expert. Experts will tell you that 4300k is most likely the best. Now, the loss in light output isn't much at all noticeable until you start going above 6k, 6500, 7k, etc. I thinik a set of the 6k Phillips will be your best bet. It is not like you are going to say, "Wow! There is a significant loss in light." Heck, you might not even notice, other than the color has changed to a more pleasing blue-white hue.
