Blown HID Ballast...need help

Ok, well I thought I had a blown headlight bulb. Changed the bulbs out and no dice, checked all fuses and everything looked fine. After a nice $125 diagnostic fee from the dealer here in Jax, they tell me I have a blown ballast. Well Infiniti doesnt sell the ballast alone, they only sell the entire headlight assembly to the tune of $1400. So heres the question, should I try to find a ballast somewhere on the net, doubt I would find a OEM, and take a chance pullng the headlight and replacing it? Or just take the proverbial "kick in the nuts" and get it replaced? Thanks for the guidance and help to all who opine.

BTW, my car has 93K so its well out of warranty....of course.

well it would be cheaper to buy a ballast on the forums, but really the choice is up to you.

Ebay has a TON of nissan/infiniti ballasts. It is a shame you got the dealer to diagnose this for you as a simple bulb swap would have done the same thing. Read the myG37 how2 on removing your headlight. Alternatively, Ebay also has a few used full headlight setups...just more coin than a used ballast.

Thanks MishMosh! I found that thread, at least it will make it easier to access than having to remove the whole bumper. The mechanic from the dealership was pretty sympathetic as he came out after the service tech gave me the keys back. He suggested the same thing and said its a load of crap that Infiniti wont sell the ballast since they do for practically every other model.

Thanks again to all who opined! Love this place, lots of good info!!!
