Re: Got Rear-ended Today

I was rear-ended in mine, too. Minor bumper cover damage. It cost about $600 to repair the car, plus it was in the shop for a week.

If you claim it on her insurance, you can get a rental car while you don't have yours, and you can be sure that it gets paid for. Plus, if there's any unseen damage underneath, there's no extra hassle getting more money.

If you decide to just let her pay for it, you should take down her insurance info anyway as a backup. As long as she pays the bill in a timely fashion, no problem. If not, you can always call them up. Hopefully you have her name, address, driver's license #, and license plate/make/model as well. She's probably not going to want to spring for a rental car, though, and I know I wouldn't be able to get by without a car for a week.

Also, you say your neck is starting to bother you. On another rear-end incident not involving my G, my wife was rear-ended at a stoplight in her Grand Cherokee. Her neck got so stiff at the scene she couldn't move it, and started to panic, which made it hard for her to breath, and she was hauled off in an ambulance. Her shoulder was stiff for nearly a year. I was in the Jeep during that accident too, and came out competely unharmed. It could take a week or so for your neck to start bugging you due to the accident, and medical bills can far outweigh car repairs. I think she'd much rather deal with higher premiums than to pay your doctors bills if it comes to that.

Just my two cents. Most people think, "oh, it's just a bumper scratch." The guy that hit our Jeep said, "look, it's not even damaged" when it was clearly mis-aligned after the impact, and my wife was fully into that panic state at that time and I was trying to get him to just shut up for a minute about the damned cars so I could calm her down and decide whether or not she needed an ambulance. Throughout that whole incident, his priority was in getting home, because he was already running late. Needless to say, he didn't even have insurance and it wasn't his car. With that, I needed a police report for my insurance for the uninsured motorist coverage, plus that ambulance. He didn't bother to stick around for the cops, so they added "hit and run" to their notes before going to visit him at his home. I don't know what became of him. Where my family and my car is involved, its just safer not to trust other people.
