Phoenix gas shortage

Hi everyone,
Just thought I’d ask how all you Phoenix-area drivers are doing with this gas shortage. I’m getting pretty nervous myself--it’s going to kill me if I have to take the bus!

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Sucks.... I am not driving my G. Driving my other car. I want to ID a gas station that will have a good amount of gas. I do not want be sucking up a bunch of sediment and crap from the bottom of their pumps.

I think Chevron has some pretty consistent deliveries to the station at I-10 and Elliot.

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

My G is my only car. I’m going to try to get gas on the way home—along with everyone else who hasn’t filled up already. What annoys me is that they’re saying that about 90% of people are just topping off. They’re screwing over those of us who really do need gas.
This is just ridiculous!

PS. I live in the East Valley (looks like you live or work here too). I’ll post if I actually find anything!

Check out www.kfyi.com for a listing of gas stations.

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Jen-

I live in Gilbert and it was still dry last night. How did you make out? This morning a couple stations had gas. From what I understand the pipeline will be in testing through Friday. If all goes well they will flush the line this weekend. Then they will begin pumping gas up to us so we should have gas, supplied by the pipeline, by next Wednesday.

Also we (Phoenix) got approval from the EPA to burn alternate types of fuel other than the special "phoenix blend". This will help us get gas quicker also. The gas we get will probably have better performance than the "phoenix blend". Other parts of the country enjoy 93 octane rated premium, we in phoenix only get 91 octane.

Oh well, I am looking forward to the Bears vs. Cardinals on Friday. I will crawl there if I have to! GO BEARS!

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Oneshotkill. Thanks, yes, I did get gas. I paid $2.59 for regular unleaded and $4 for a bottle of octane boost, but I only had to wait 5 min! Now, they’re saying today that the pipeline failed one of the tests—great. At least we can use the gas w/o MTBE, I didn’t realize that we were the only place in the country that uses it. No wonder our gas is so expensive.

One thing I have noticed now that I’m driving like a granny—the lights really are timed for the speed limit. With fewer people on the road and me driving slower, I’ve been hitting most of the lights green. I’m curious about whether or not my gas mileage will improve too. If it does, I may try to slow down…who am I kidding, I won’t slow down!! I may try, but I will fail miserably!

Have fun at the Cards game, personally, I’m waiting for hockey season to start!

Cameron38. Any idea why it is that we don’t get the higher octane out here in the west? Is it ‘cause of our pollution problem?

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

California uses MTBE too, and our prices also suffer accordingly.

As for mileage, what speeds are you talking about?

I did notice a very significant mileage increase by travelling 65 instead of 85. (About 3-4 per gallon -- though it's not entirely scientific, I haven't compared the same stretch of road in the same direction at two different speeds, and it wasn't a flat stretch.)

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

I thought Cali outlawed MTBE ‘cause they discovered it was a carcinogen? I guess I was mistaken. I haven’t kept a written log of my MPG, but I only got above 20 once and I have a feeling that I forgot to hit the reset ‘cause it was like 22-23. I’m usually around 17-18, I think. I do have a lead foot, I don’t accelerate too hard, but I don’t stop accelerating until I’m around 50-60 mph on surface streets and 80ish on the freeways (traffic permitting). If there’s traffic I just give up and play follow the leader.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not really complaining, my old car was a Civic. It got great mileage, but I nicknamed it ‘the gutless wonder’ for a reason. If we went up to Laughlin/Vegas we’d have to get a ¼ mile running start in order to pass someone uphill. Even with gas at $2.60/gal for regular unleaded I still wouldn’t trade my G!

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Last time we went to Vegas was in a Caravan, and I had to bring up the rear because when I set my cruise, it kept that speed uphill in the heat, and noone else could keep up (at a measly 5 over the limit, or even right at the limit). So I took up the rear. When we got near the city, the lead car called us on the cell phone, told us to take the lead since we had the directions. We were two cars back, and figure a good 15 car lengths of empty space between each car. I said, "Okay, we'll take the lead" and hung up, and my wife, who was driving, punched it -- and we passed the lead car before he could close his phone.

Cali still has MTBE in the gas, there's just a big warning sticker on the pump saying the gas has MTBE, which is known to the State of California to be a carcinogen.

I normally get about 22-24 on the highway trips to Vegas. That one trip where I was following at a measly 55-65mph the whole way I got 27mpg.

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Wow, I never realized that a Dodge Caravan had any guts. I’m impressed! My frustration with my Civic was the reason that I found the G (well, that and the fact that it was totaled in a rear end collision). I am so happy to be in a car that actually goes when I tell it to. I was always fighting to get around traffic in the Honda ‘cause I couldn’t out accelerate anyone (well, maybe a bicycle) but I naturally drove faster than most people on the road. Some people would just slow down, but not me, I just bought a faster car! I think that’s what happens when your dad raises you watching F1 racing. As for the mileage, I’ll let you know, I figure that this is the best MPG that I will ever get. It’d be nice to see somewhere near the 26 mpg that they say you can get, but I will accept whatever I get.

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Yea Cali and others are trying to outlaw MTBE, the tree huggers fought hard to get it added to the gasoline. It is added to gas to make it burn "cleaner" and prevent smog. So once they pull MTBE out of gas because it is a carcinogen, they will be complaining about smog again. Vicious circle. Oh well.

How did the discussions de-rail into a Dodge Caravan! Damn, it made my stomach upset. I hope Ryoken at least had an eventful experience in Vegas :- )

Re: Phoenix gas shortage

Not Dodge Caravan... a Caravan of vehicles. A train of cars, if you will. Sorry.. the capitalization may have been in error.

It was actually an early '90s Ford Windstar, an early 90's Saturn, and my G35 sedan.

The mileage figures I mentioned where for my G35.
