My insurance cost increased!!!

I just recently opened up my mail, and found out the cost on my insurance had increased. Don't know why? No tickets, no accidents.....it just increased. I'm 26 and the only one on the policy. I'm planning on calling up my insurance to find out why I paid $720 (6months/$500 deductible/full coverage) and now it's $808 (6months/$500 deductible/full coverage). I was wondering if anyone knows why? Do you guys recommend me to change and what insurance company do you recommend me to have. BTW....my current car insurance company is Horace Mann.

Re: My insurance cost increased!!!

It probably increased cause they found out you are getting married j/k.

Seriously, though I'm 4 years older than you are I pay only $1150 a year and that includes one other car 100/200/100 $500 deductible coverage. I'm not saying you are going to get this price, cause i've been with Mercury Insurance for over 6 years and I get a discount each year.

I would just call AIS. I did. They will give you a free quote over the phone. Doesn't hurt to call.

Hey Sherwin. Maybe they found about the mods on the engine we did last week and they noticed the tremendous amount of shine you've been putting on. haha. But I also have Mercury and they seem to be great. But i know my insurance will be going up cause of the crash. dont know how much yet. But try Mercury.

Happened to me too. I read (on this site I think) that the G was reclassified from a ‘regular’ sedan to a ‘performance’ sedan. I think it had something to do with the horsepower to weight ratio being too high. It now costs me the same to insure the G sedan as it does to insure the S2000, whereas before my G was $100 less/6 months. Good luck, maybe you can find somewhere less expensive!

Re: My insurance cost increased!!!

It seems that everyone has Mercury insurance.....how was the experience when dealing with them? Is it possible to deal with my insurance and see if they can lower it by telling them the other deal that I would find? In other words....do insurance companies negotiate a rate so you can stay with them?

They stay with them..

I've been in a few accidents with Mercury, and I've have no problem with them. Basically told them where I dropped off my car and they took care of the rest.

Re: My insurance cost increased!!!

Your Rates are not up for bagining. Not all of us use Mercury, some of us stay with other companies. There are many out there-you need to make sure that you are getting all the discounts you can with your current carrier. Call your broker and see if they have another carrier that has the same coverage but at a lower cost. If you are happy with Mercury then stay there, the market is hard right now and carriers are tighting up on underwriting so don't blame your agent. You can always play with your deductable as a last resort. If you are a renter see if there is a discount for having 2 policies with Mercury. You may find you can save some cash that way and get some other coverage. Life insurance discounts are given by some companies as well. Just call and ask if they can help you reduce you cost of insurance. If they keep your policy because of what I told you, let them know it was the competition that they bash all the time on TV.

The two lowest rate i known so far are Wawanesa and American Express. I currently have Wawanesa and have been with them since 95. Give them a call and you be suprise how much saving you will enjoy.

The thing about Wawanesa is you deal directly with the company. No middle man and also you can't have more than 2 points per year. If you do, they kick you out. They only sell insurance in California and Oregon.

Surewin:

hey . . .my wife changes car insurance companies everytime it comes up for renewal.

In the last three years, we have had Mercury, 20th (or is that 21st now?), and currently AMEX.

Never settle just because you like them. It is only a service, just like your mobile phone. Shop the competition...it could not hurt. Let them know you are transferring because your old company is hiking your rate. Also, shop your existing company under another name....tell them it is a new car and that you are looking for insurance. See if they quote you more or less. And regardless of what they say, zip codes still play a part in ins. cost, as well as the distance you drive to work and the total miles per year.

cheers, ted

p.s. thanks to your wife for keeping mine unbored during the valley meet.

Re: My insurance cost increased!!!

To add: the type of car, the power of said car, your driving record, what features your car has, aftermarket alarm, is it garaged, do you have more than one car, how much driving experience you have, marital status, time with your current carrier, how many doors your vehicle has, the list can get very long depending on the carrier. Keep in mind that there are pluses and minuses to having a broker and staying with the same carrier. You would be better off with your broker to guide you to the right coverages and amounts and if he gives you wrong advise you have someone to hang it on. Check with Mercury to see if the offer a company specific consistancy discount.Let your broker do the work,as that is some of what they get paid for.

Re: My insurance cost increased!!!

Well contacted my insurance company regarding the insurance price increase. Found out that there was a recent legislative bill that passed creating a huge increase in insurance rates. From what the representative told me..."across the board, in all states, insurance will increase." She told me that in California there is a 35% increase. And in texas there is a 65% increase. Of course she is in Illinois and that they had the same percentage in california. I was shocked. I even pleaded trying to find out the age, when my insurance is going to drop.....when I turn 30 years old! I was able to drop it by $50 bucks. Turns out in california, we have a difference in marking our milage annually. So the less you drive your car.....the less you get charged. She also told me the brackets in which they are divided. (0-7500), (7501-15,000), (15,001-???) Luckily i fell in the 7501-15,000 so they are taking 50 bucks off.

Re: My insurance cost increased!!!

What 35% increase? Texas rates will have no affect on you. Workers Comp is what is taking the hit in Cali. Give me a PM with more of what you were told and I'll see if I can help.
