Tire Width

I have searched aroung on the forum a little bit but didn't quite find the information i was looking for and wondered if anyone could help. I'm buying BFG KDW 2's and I have an 04 coupe (stock rims with 245/45 in the rear and 225/45 in the front). I think i want to go wider in the back, but I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do--if so, how wide should i go, and should I go wider in the front? Whats the best combo, or should i stay stock...?

Thanks,

Hockeyplay95

You really can't go much bigger on the tire size and have the wheel look right. 245 is about the max tire size you can put on an 8 in rim. You may be able to squeeze 255 but it may bulge out slightly. You might want to upgrade to aftermarket rims if your tires are worn and use the stockers for a winter set up! Hope that helps.

Thanks--so if I wanted to go larger i should go 255/45 in the rear and stay with 225/45 in the front(or should this be 235/45)? If i do go 255 in the rear will it decrease handling?

This has been covered to death - Yes 275s will physically fit an 8" wide rim, some folks have done it and swear it works. BUT it's the wrong thing to do. You'll have severe tire bulge, and that combo will not be safe. In addition no manufacturer will honor any warranty if something happens. Legitimate tire shops will not install this combo on the stock wheel.

You could go with 245/40/18 in front and 255/45/18 in the rear. You'll maintain the stagger, reduce some of the understeer, and have a more neutral handling car. AND, you'll get the wider look you're after with your stock wheels.

How big.................?

From what I've seen in the last few years tire buldge
is not a good idea, plus it isn't safe! I never liked the
idea of having 225s on the front so I would go with
235s or 245s max. On the rear don't go over 255s
on the stock rims! For good prices on tires check
with the Tire Rack and you might ask them what size
tires you could get away with.....LOL

Read my above post above. 245/40/18 is same OD as stock 225/45/18. 255/45/18 is a bit taller than the the 245/45/18 stock tire, but not by much. I'm not @ home so I don't have my tire specs handy. 255/40/18 will be to smaller in OD and will affect the VDC, and leave a large fender gap.

Just put 245/40-18's on the front and 255/45-18's on the back in BFG KDW-2s...sticky, look great and are not as loud as the Pilot sports..no VDC issues..a little heavier front response but otherwise much more neutral handling
