Shaving wheels to clear calipers
Shaving wheels to clear calipers
Anybody ever try to mill or "turn" wheels to take material off the inside of the spokes. Just attempted to install a Stoptech BBK and have approx. .5mm clearance which isn't enough. I'd prefer not to run a spacer since my 35mm offset wheels are at my personal limit already. I did print out the template and it appeared I had about 2mm clearance, but I guess not. I'd just have to take 2mm off the ridges (extra material cast on the inside edges of the spokes) on the inside of the spokes. I know these ridges provide strength for the wheel, but 2 mm would still leave approx. 3 mm of the ridge remaining. I do track my car so I'm am concerned over high stresses, but you have to figure wheels have a design safety factor of about 2. Inputs?

get new wheels. you do realize that the wheels is the one thing that's preventing you from hitting other cars and stuff, right? if you have no wheels (as in, they break off), your brakes won't be too effective.
I really doubt a wheel maker would design their wheel on that ragged of an edge where a mm would make a big diff. But you would be hardpressed to find someone to actually recommend it.
Another idea is to take 1 mm off the caliper and 1mm off the spoke.
Or as someone else suggested a spacer. I'd take a commonly available 5 mm spacer and have a machine shop mill it down to 2-3mm. That's probably what I'd do

Thanks for re-enforcing what I think I already knew. Shaving 1mm off the wheel and 1mm off the corners of the caliper would be ideal but a pain. I'm not even sure I could find someone to do the wheels and if I did shave the calipers, I'd have to re-paint them. Getting a 2mm spacer (or milling a 5mm down) is the most logical and I'll just have to get used to the wheels sticking out farther.
Don't shave the wheel!
If the wheel ever did break, for any reason, you would be totally liable. No insurance company would cover an accident where a wheel broke and the owner ground material off the spokes.
Sell your wheels and buy new wheels that fit.
