Same size tires f & r
Same size tires f & r
I received a post from gsedanman who has same size snow tires front and rear and says he has had no problems. I am wanting to run same size everyday tires and was wondering if anyone else has done so. The dealer says not to and Discount Tire has a post that you shouldn't go less than 1/2" or more than 3/4" difference fornt to rear or the ABS,etc. will not work properly. Anybody?
Re: Same size tires f & r
you have a coupe, gsedanman has (i'm assuming) a sedan.
That would account for the difference between the two sources.
My understanding is that for the coupe, you do want the "stagger", someone please correct me if I'm wrong

You're wrong on at least one point:
gsedanman does, indeed, have a coupe and not a sedan. He used to have a sedan, then he traded it in when the coupe came out, and didn't change his forum name. He has the most posts of any member on this forum, and would have to go back to zero posts to be "gcoupeman."

my dealer said 225 all around would be fine for the coupe for snows.

It's more than just width. You also need to match the outer tire diameters as well. This can be calculated using the width, aspect ratio, and wheel size. I've been pondering the same question about going to the all-same-tire-size replacement. If possible, it should help reduce variation in tire tread wear and extend the usable tire life. I'm not sure about what it does to ABS, VDC, and traction control systems either. I have attached an analysis I created to compare rear-to-front tire diameter ratios.
Ideally, you would like to keep the same as the OEM ratios. I have included the best size for the staggered 17" replacements which should work quite well based on the rear-to-front diameter ratio. I have also included the best size for the all-same-tire-size replacement option. (Notice that your speedometer reading will be slightly off (about 1mph at 60mph) with this setup.) Will the all-same-tire-size replacement option with the slight difference in rear-to-front diameter ratio cause problems with the systems mentioned above?
If anyone out there has proven that the all-same-tire size replacement is O.K., please let us know about it.
