Summer tires in cool weather; fun
Took the car out tonight to get some starbucks. The temp was right at 75 degrees, but the tires weren't really warmed up yet. I had driven maybe a mile when I caught a light. When it turned green, I slowly accellerated to maybe 15, then gave the throttle a quick mash to maybe 50%. The car just spun. It was quite fun.
I then shifted to second, and slowly ran it up to about 4k rpms. I then stapped the throttle to 50-75%, and again, I just spun.
No real point here; a few months ago I posted a thread about running summer rubber in the southeast during the winter. Winters not even here yet, and I'm spinning
.
After about 5 miles or so, I had no more traction problems.

Ok...I see it now...you are running 245/40 profile in the rear ...I'm at 255/45...there is quite a bit diff. in diameters there(?is the 6mt sedan and the coupe final drive ratio the same?).reason I'm curious is because I rarely spin with throttle alone ... most of my early morn. drive is twisties so by the time i'm down on the flats the tires are all sticky so no spin...
I have'nt aggressively launched my BFG's, but I have slipped them a bit when leaving the light...

Actually, it's only a difference of 10mm per tire. Diameters will be different, but contact patch should be close.
Yes, all the gearing is the same, including final drives. One big difference between you and me are your tires; what types of BFG's are you running, KDW2's? These kumho's aren't the most aggressive for traction(but better than other tires I've had on the car).
It's probably just a combination of the tires being cool, and because it was at 9pm at night, probably a little bit of dew on the ground. Who knows, maybe there was some oil as well.

We've had some cooler weather here lately. Maybe 62 during the early morning hours. I didn't experience the kind of slippage you're experiencing. It still takes quite a bit to spin the tires. Maybe the Kumhos aren't really that great, but i've never had any experience with them.

The kumho's don't offer the traction of something like the KDW2's, but the SPT's(which I'm running) offer the best traction of any tire I've used.
I don't think it's a problem with the tire; I think it was a combination of the tire's composition, the ambient temps, and the surface conditions.

Contact patch may be similar but diameter difference works out to 95% (rounded)..that = lower final ratio= easier to spin tires. A little change there can make a pretty good difference..I am running the KDW2s and loving them, and yes,(from tire rack) to be stickier.

+1 with my pilot sports. The exhaust and cat backs must make a difference.

already? the way the temps are down here, I might be looking at mid to late November to switch.
Switch tires to winter balonies?...awwwwh...whadda PITA!...I just park Bart when it gets to cold/snowy - "fly of the slippery mountian road weather"!
Got a fj80 cruiser with 33's for that crap and it never even needs chains at the chain check.
