Tire Tread question...
Tire Tread question...
Hey guys quick question...Just got my rear tires changed because they looked and felt bald...Anyways after they installed the tires they gave me a report with the tire tread levels...The rears said 10/32 Im assuming that 10 means 100%? As those were the new tires...The fronts read 4/32...Going by my theory does this mean I have 40% tread left?? If so, how low can I go? Thanks...
No
10/32" is the depth of the tread. New tires came in a range of 10/32" to 12/32". The wear bars start to show at 2/32", and the tire is effectively worn at this point. Another way to meaure tread depth is to use a penny. Stick it in the tread with Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head with the coin inserted in the tire, it's worn. At 4/32" your fronts don't have much farther to go.
Remember this also, 80% of tire failures come in the last 20% of the tire's life.

Yep to ^^^
10/32 is 10/32 of an inch. Wear them down to 2/32" and you have legally run down your tires to 0%, although technically you haven't. And since some tires start out with more than 10/32, you really can't go by the "10 means 100%" since it wouldn't work all the time.
