Will 20' wheels slower your 0-60 or 1/4mile time?>

I am thinking that it will make your times slower b/c of the extra weight. But, on the other hand the larger diameter wheel should make up for the extra weight b/c of your getting more distance per revolution than a smaller wheel would. Could someone please clarify this for me?

you can't think of it like "you're getting more distance per revolution than a smaller wheel" for two reasons.

One, the tire's profile will be less with a 20" (not 20') wheel, so you should make the overall diameter of the tire the same, which would yield the same distance per revolution.

Two, even if you were getting more distance per revolution, it'd just take longer to revolve one cycle. Making the overall time for a specific distance the same.

You've got to understand the Wheel diameter versus the aspect ratio of the tire. A good example is the G35 front 18" wheel vs. the Corvette front wheel. G35 comes with a 225/45, the upgrade 18" size for 8.5" rims is 245/40 - Both are 25.8" in OD. Then you look at the Vette, it has 17" front wheels with 245/45 tires on it, guess what the OD is - You'd be right if you said 25.8". The Vette has the same stagger as the "G", they only do it a different way. So the diameter of the wheel is only a factor of what the ultimate outer diameter will be. You must factor in size and aspect ratio.

The biggest factor here is probably the rotational mass of the wheel itself, and how that mass is distributed throughout the wheel. Typically, in my non-automotive applications, I've found that a smaller wheel improves acceleration.... think BMX vs. mountain bike, BMX is faster in a sprint.

Sidewall height plays a big role here. If you keep the overall diameter the same (20 inch wheel with lower profile tires) you will in fact hurt the car's ability to launch, as you are removing the flex from the tire.

If you raise the overall height of the wheel/tire combo, then you will also run slower.

I have been told multiple times that 20s will slow you down, but to be honest I don't really notice a dip in speed at all. I am not a big speed feen though, so maybe I am just not sensitive enough to notice. All in all though, 20s look sick.

i did notice a big drop when I accelerate. The car feels a little sluggish. From other owner that have the same type of rims, they noticed it too. (Wreck, and djgcue). I believe that the weight of the rims play a role as well.

on my Z going from stock 17's to 19's with wider rubber made a significant difference in acceleration. The diameter is about the same but my 19's are a few pounds heavier than stock.

unless you get them forged, 20's with tires are HEAVY

Re: Will 20' wheels slower your 0-60 or 1/4mile time?>

surewin,

you are correct. the weight of the rim have a lot to do with it. A friend of mine told me that if for example, stock rim weighted 120 and the after market rin weighted 100 lbs. In general, every lbs you gain, it is equal to 4 lbs of added weight. for example, the after market rim is 20 lighter and base on the equation, you need to add 80 lbs on the after market rim car to be same as the stock car with stock rim.

I know i get flame for this. This discussion have been talk before about light weight rim, blah blah. I purchase the volk te37 is because it light. Some people here question about how ridiculous it is to buy a light weight rim and this car is not a formula 1 etc...

IMHO, i do feel a big difference after i put the rim on. I feel the car response faster when i hit the gas. I don't know about the quarter mile time, but for sure the response time is quicker.

I think the title of this post should be: Does anybody with 20's care if their car is .1 of a second slower in the 1/4? I'm sure the answer to all the posts would be "no". Some guys are really concerned about performance above all else, some guys aren't.

Yes, when I put 20s on my car it definatly feels slower. This past weekend when I was installing my HKS coilovers, I wieghed my 20 iforged flux wheels. The fronts wieghed 65 and the rear wieghed 72! The tires are Bridgestone S03 245/35/20 and 285/30/20.

juicedcoupe, I actually launch better with my 20s. Probably because the 285s gives me more traction.

Re: Will 20' wheels slower your 0-60 or 1/4mile time?>

Rotational mass, it's the same thing you deal with when building a motor. It's harder to spin something when it's heavier. So yea if the 20's are heavier, than it will slow you down. But hey if you got 20's your looking good going down the track. It's what you want to do, look good or go fast. Or an easy way to compensate is to just increase the hp when you get 20's. Just an excuse to get a motor upgrade.
