18" Winter Tires

I live in Boston, I was wondering if it is possible to mount 18" snow tires on my coupe's standard wheels. Otherwise I will have to purchase 17" rims and tires. I am looking to save some money, any advice?

Re: 18" Winter Tires

I went for a set of 17" wheels and winter tires to replace my 18" wheels during the winter months (MN). I think there are more winter tires available at the 17" size. Also, it seems that a set of 18" winter tires cost almost as much as a set of 17" wheels AND tires. I figured that it would probably be easier to change the wheels myself rather than bringing the tires to a shop twice a year to change and balance. Hopefully it'll work out. So far so good.

Re: 18" Winter Tires

Mounting 18" would save you some dough, but changing the tires at the end of winter and summer is a pain and could damage your rims if not done carefully. -- 18" snows would be costly, but cheaper than buying new wheels and tires.
**I see you have a 6M/T, so be careful if you go for the 17" setup: some don't clear the Brembos.**
If you haven't experienced the snow on the stock Pilots, you really want to avoid that like the 'Plague'. They are Dangerous.

In the long run, wouldn't cheap steal wheels save you more money by not having to mount/unmount the summer/winter tires twice a year?

Re: 18" Winter Tires

Does anyone know which inexpensive 17" rim models clear the brembros?

Re: 18" Winter Tires

I got 17" Mille Miglia Spider IIs that clear the brembos, with Blizzak WS-50s for $1,268 shipped from the 'rack.

I think the wheels were ~$170 each. I think they look pretty sweet for a snow setup.

Do you know of anyone who sells cheap steel wheels for the 6MT coupe? I was curious about that one myself.

Those Spider II's look nice...any pics on the car?
I like the mille miglia ht3's for around the same price also....did you check to see if those fit with the brembros?
What a cool excuse to buy new rims...for safety's sake!

Check out www.tiretrends.com, these guys can provide you with 18" Hankook W300 Ice Bears Winters for under $150.00 (US) per tire. Awesome deal. I got the Ice Bears on my Coupe stock rims and very happy with them. Will be getting 19"s in the spring...yeah baby.

Not yet, but comments have been very good on guys that have had them in snow. So far it's great on dry for a snow tire.

Re: 18" Winter Tires

I priced out a set of 18's and it came to $1000. If I can get a set 17's for the same price, I'll be real happy!

Anyone have pics of their 17's on their coupe?

Re: 18" Winter Tires

On those Hanook tires the price looks nice but did you call to get that price cause it is around 200 a tire on the site. Also does having a V rated tire have any bearing as opposed to a Z rated tire. I forgot what the Rating represents as far as speed. I mean I dont plan on doing 140 this winter in the snow but was just curious.

Re: 18" Winter Tires

duhprez,
What size tires did you get in the Ice Bears? Also, did you speak to someone in particular at triretrends?

Re: 18" Winter Tires

The size of my Hankooks are;

Front: 225/40R18
Back: 245/45R18

Mounted on my original rims.

I spoke to Bob, but you can also speak to Mort. Mention that you're from the G35 Forum for a great discount.
