Offset Explanation

Can someone please give me an explanation of how offsets work to enable wheel widths of 10" and wider to fit under our g35's? I'm having an argument with someone on why my 20x10's will fit and I can't think of a good way to explain offsets and why they'll fit.

Basically OFFSET is determined by the relation of the wheels Hub Mount Plate to the center line of the wheel...

If you are looking at the wheel from the side (so you are looking at how wide it is...)

A ZERO "0" offset wheel will have the hub mounting point in the center line of the wheel (rite down the middle)...

A wheel with a POSITIVE Offset (example +22) will be 22mm closer to the face (or away from the back of the wheel)...

A wheel with a NEGITIVE Offset (example -7) will be 7mm closer to the back of the wheel (or away from the face of the wheel)...

In many cases, this is referred to as "BACK SPACING"....

For example... If you see a wheel that is 10" wide with a 6" back spacing, it means the mounting point of the wheel is 6 inches from the back of the wheel. To figure out what "Offset" this wheel is... Divide the Width of the wheel by 2 (10" / 2 = 5") and subtract this number from the amount of back spacing (6" - 5" = +1").... This tells us this wheels offset from the center line is +1" (or +25.4mm offset...)

The same works in reverse....

IE...

10" wheel with 4" back spacing will be a wheel with -25.4mm

The Below images are from ENKEI...

Any other questions?

^ Understanding offset is one thing, but explaining that clearly is not easy. Nicely done!
