Cheap alternative to Michelin Pilots

I found these similar-looking tires at Discount Tire Direct that cost $100 less per tire. Does anyone know anything about them? It looks like their treadwear rating is pretty poor in relation to the Michelins, but my experience has always been (in my old car, at least) that I need new tires every year, due to the year-round warm-hot roads in south Florida, no matter what kind of tire I bought. 'Just trying to plan ahead for when that time comes.

Companies like Hankook (the one you linked) and Kumho are starting to become popular these days. They make pretty good tires for a lot less money. You may not get max performance from them, but you'll definately get a better price/performance ratio out of them.

It's too bad they don't make sedan-sized tires.

Tread not similar, but look at Dunlop SP9000s. They are a great handling tire, and cost a bunch less the the Michelins.

Re: Cheap alternative to Michelin Pilots

i had a problem with kumhos on my old stang, I went from the Protenza RE730 to the kumho and the traction loss was amazin, the car was able to spin the tires at will... The wet handeling was horrific.

Tires are the absolute most impotrant part of your car, the way it rides and handels are DIRECTLY link to the tires.

You got a mid 30k car .... dont chesse out on the tires.

The Pilots are Very Pricey and are GREAT tires. But you can get Goodyear F1 GS-D3's and Bridestone S03's for a decent amount less.

Just curious, because they have several different models, and the ECSTA MX is supposed to stick to the pavement pretty well, there are several autocrosser's that love the tire. Kumho makes racing rubber, as well.

Re: Cheap alternative to Michelin Pilots

Kumhos and Hankooks are great, I work at a Commercial Kumho Dealer and get Kumho car tires for everyone in the family. They are just as good as Michelins and even better than Dunlops, REMEMBER that Dunlop is the Goodyear crap brand! Whoever had a bad expericence with a Kumho must have bought a wrong model.

Re: Cheap alternative to Michelin Pilots

I had Kumho Ecsta 712s on my old car. For the money they were pretty decent; I don't know if I would go as far as to say they were "great" though, but they definitely look good! I just wish they had our size in that tire. When the time comes, I'll probably go with those Hancooks for the front and Pilot A/Ss in the rear.
