Tire Wear Pattern for RWD Cars

I've been searching around for this and haven't had luck finding a solid answer. I know with FWD cars that the front tires always wear the quickest. With RWD cars being more balanced and the traction and steering tasks being split between the front and rear, is there any bias on wear for RWD cars?

I'm going to put my summer wheels/tires back on and noticed one set has slightly more wear. I wanted to put that set in the position that wears the slowest. Thanks for the help!

Of course the drive tires will wear faster. Unfortunately, with the stock G35 rims, the middle rear treads wear prematurely rather than evenly across. With the fronts, the inside feathering is another issue. The sedans can be rotated but don't have the front issues anyway. The 08 G37 will give everyone an option with the 18's being non staggered for rotations.

Tire pressure is really important with tire wear as well, always check your tires (and oil, coolant, power steering fluid, brake fluid) at least once a month or more if you drive a lot.

Thanks for the response Bocatrip. I found another article that confirmed what you said and what I was thinking that the rear wheels would wear faster. Anyway, the summer wheels are back on and look great.

Exactly right. You're one of the few on here that post both of these issues. I have them too.

The fronts need constant alignments to reduce feathering and the rear rims are too small for the tires wearing the centres. I run less pressure there but it doesn't help much at all.

Running your tires with less pressure is not a good idea. It will cause more heat and friction and overall more wear for the entire tire. You are correct with regards to the rim being too narrow to accomodate the tire thus causing the rear tires to bulge convexly causing the middle tread wear. I am attempting to run the same size tires on my rear as my fronts....225/50/17s. I know many will say this will affect the handling and possibly trigger the VDC. I will find out. My service manager believes it is feasable as a possible fix and might prove the rims as being the culprit for premature wear on the rears. I want to see if the tire footprint with the 225s will spread evenly with the combination of a wider rim (8 on the rear versus 7.5 on the fronts) as well as a narrower tire. The height difference is less than 1/2 inch and the speedo will be 1 MPH over. No big deal. I'll keep everyone posted. I'm sick and tired of going through tires.
