Winter setup

Does anyone have their winter setups for the sports model yet? And where did you guys get it from and how much? I need to get a set for myself before it gets to late.

dude. it's july but yeah, good idea to get winter tires now before the rush.

i had my G through last winter, so i already have winter tires. tirerack has some good options. Went with michelin pilot alpin pa2 h-rated 225/55/17 tires.

At the time I went into discount tires because tire rack didn't have a setup for the '07 G35 sedans yet and wouldn't sell me any rims. I picked up cheap *** X-6 rims from discount tires. They're ugly, but they use a universal mount pattern so you don't have to remove the bolt on the front brakes. And they were cheap

Just purchased a Sport 6MT and have been researching a winter set up. So it appears from dopey's real world experience--in St Paul no less !--the sport 6MT can go to 17" rims, though I've heard and read contrary opinions.

Thinking about Dunlop M3s on cheapish 17" Rial Como rims from tirerack. Other option is to stay with 18" and go for Blizzaks 22/25 front and back. The Blizzak WS50s recommended on tire rack don't test all that well.

Any thoughts out there on other winter set up suggestions?

The sport can even run 17" steelies with winters if you get the right rims. I know for a fact Garnet Canuck was running 17" steelies from a Maxima last winter on his 07 Sport.
Another option is to look for a used set of 17" alloys from the 07 Journey/G35X and put on some 225/55/17 winter tires.

Thanks. The used 17" alloys from a Journey/X is a good idea.

Right, not all 17" will clear the brake calipers. Best stick with ones known to work (i.e. tirerack.com's specifics) or go to a local discount tires or something like that. Since I bought my car in nov '06, finding 17" from a '07 journey/x was a little hard . Even now I haven't seen many for sale. cheap 17" rims really aren't that expensive. I paid $75 each for mine and they do the job.

And yeah, in St Paul MN I'd be an idiot not to have winter tires .
I like the Dunlop M3s. Those are the tires I wanted, but since tirerack wouldn't sell me rims, I just bought the pilot alpin 2's that discount tires carried since they would sell me rims . The m3 and pilot alpin 2 are good choices. Both are performance winter tires thus aren't so great in deep snow, but if you live in a major metro area and can take time off work or whatever if you get deep snow fall, you'll be fine. The WS50s are more designed for deeper snow/ice, BUT you lose alot of performance traction.

Dopey, yeah, I agree with all you state about regional winter conditions. No deep snow I'd have to drive in.

But why wouldn't tire rack sell you 17" rims? They recommend 17" rims for the G35S on their website. I guess we have to pay attention to the offsets on the winter rims.

I have seen and did a set up with tirerack.com and it came out to be like $700 i think with 17" and a set of snow tires.

When I first bought my car (nov '06) the G was brand new. Of course, nov/dec is already winter tire time in MN. Tirerack refused to sell me rims because they couldn't guarantee any rims that fit. So I had to go to the local discount tire and actually try on different rims that fit and buy the rims from them.

Sometime in January I think someone on this site actually brought their '07 G35S in to the tirerack retail shop, and the tirerack guys took measurements and came up with wheels that fit, but prior to that they refused to sell me wheels.

G35 S: $700 is about right. $80-100 each for snow tires, plus $80-100 for cheaper 17" rims, so 700 is right there in the mix. I paid about 120 each for Pilot Alpin 2 tires, and $75 each for these rims:

They're ugly and that stupid X pattern looks stupid, but oh well, they were cheap and they do what they need to do in the winter.

As a guide:

Where do you live?
-This is important so you can choose the correct wheel/tire for your area. If light snow is the norm, a performance snow tire may suit you. For places like Minnesota, a studded tire on downsized rims may work better.

Downsize?
-If your OEMs have low profiles (35-45) you may want to downsize on the winter wheel to 17s to give you an extra cushion for better protection and a softer ride.

Where to Buy?
-I went to Tirerack and many others have found it to be one of the best places to go. The prices are relatively low and they are well known and have dependable service.
