Caring for chrome wheels?

I read this on autoanything.com:
Do not: go more than one week between washing
When brake dust is allowed to sit for long periods of time, it forms pits in the chrome plating that can be disastrous. Dirt and dust now have a place to burrow into your wheels, interrupting your shine. And, the elements can now get into these pits, allowing corrosion to start.

The lip on my wheels are chrome plated and I usually just take a terry cloth and the same soap I used on my car to wipe them down, then I dry them with a microfiber cloth. I was wondering if wiping them down will eventually cause scratches in the chrome and if I really need to wash them as often as they say?

I cleaned my wheels two weeks ago, but now they have some brake dust and water spots on them...makes me kinda worried...

I read a wheel guide and thats what it says exactly to do. Use mild soap and a terry cloth to wipe it down. I found a wheel guide HERE. Goto the Wheels section and click wheel care.

i had that issue on my FX b/c it has way too much brake dust. i used to wash them every other day especially in the winter time w/ the salt roads.

i wax my chrome lip on my G wheels once a week just to keep all the junk off of it especially road tar -- no wax = could start sticking on the wheels. you spend all the money on wheels why not keep it clean

I had chrome on my last car and the few times I went over a week without washing them, absolutely nothing happened. Chrome is a pretty darn tough coating and you generally have to be fairly abusive in order to do any real damage. The only thing I had trouble with was when I forgot to tell the dealership not to wash the car and their soap left some crap on the wheels I had to waste like 4 hours polishing off. Your wash technique sounds fine, terry will not scratch the chrome. I liked to use spray on wax with each wash because it gave the chrome a great look IMO, but it was hardly necessary.

I agree, once a week is a bit exessive and not needed 100% If you have the time do it, if not dont worry about it. Terry cloth and a little soap water brings mine back to brand new even after 2-3 weeks. It is rather annoying when the detail shop hits my tires with tire shine that requires a good cleaning ASAP.
