People with 20s, Warning

Just warning people with 20s or people thinking about getting 20s since I got a flat tire last week due to a broken rubber style valve stem. The damage I recieved from this incident was a bent rim ($109 to fix) and one bridgestone S03 ($275). A couple tire places told me that the bridgestone S03 is a great tire, but damages easily if you ever get a flat tire. As for the bent rim, since I have 20s, it was hard for me to tell I had a flat tire until I hit a lane marker (which probably bent my rim). So for those who are thinking or have 20s, it's really easy to bend these the wheels since we're running 30/35 profile tires.

Now that I'm out $400, I ask some tire places if they have road hazzard coverage and most places don't carry them for a 20in performace tire. I called Just Tires (got my Jeep offroad tires from them) which offered road hazzard and the person told me he can get Road hazzard for ANY TIRE and it DOESN"T HAVE TO BE PURCHASE FROM THEM for $11 PER TIRE! It covers all damages except for normal wear and tear. I just have to have them look at my tires before they can give me a warranty. This sounds way too good to be true, so when I get my wheel and tire back on, I'm going to head over there and get some details.

Re: People with 20s, Warning

Thanks for the heads up. I have been running Nitto 555's w/ 20's & no problems so far. It's a shame you had to go through that but it could have been worse. That tire warranty sounds great. i wish I had that in NJ...

Sup dude..

I'm curious how the tire reacted when you had the flat. Did the rubber protect the edge of the rims from scratching?

As for the bent rim, well I'm not sure how you got that from a flat tire. I know I got mine bent due to a small pot hole. And they do bend easily. I still haven't fixed it yet, but I plan to some day. It doesn't bother me anymore.

Yes the rubber protected the rim.

My rim was bent from driving over a lane marker with a flat tire. You can get your wheels fixed for about $109 @ www.fixrim.com

Cool to hear the rubber protected it from scratching.

I had plans to take it to fixrim (aka wheel america), but basically I'm pretty lazy. Don't feel like dismounting my rim to get them fix. Also my rims are ionized etc etc. so I'm afraid how it may turn out. I have no doubts they can fix the bent rim and curb rash, not sure if the lip will match the rest of my rims. But it may not matter cause its always dirty.

24 hours. They can take the tire off of your rim with no extra charge.

Are your wheels "forged" or cast. I have 20" forged 3pc wheels and have hit a lot of potholes and no bends have occured, yet.

Yes my wheels are forged. Sure you've hit alot of potholes, but HAVE YOU HIT POTHOLES WITH A FLAT TIRE?

So when you say you couldn't tell when your tire was flat until you hit a lane marker.....does that mean you couldn't tell it was flat visually?

Re: People with 20s, Warning

I guess I was directing my comment more to "wreck" than to you who said that he bent his rim by hitting a small pothole.

As far as me having a flat tire, No I haven't had the misfortune as of yet and I do feel for you. I know if that ever happened to me that I would have to shell out a lot of cash to replace the wheel and tire, probably around $3000 CAD. I did come close though. When I took of my summer wheels to put on the stock wheels for winter storage, I noticed a nail head sticking out of the tire. I am sure that I would of had an experience just like yours if I had driven it that way for any length of time.

Re: People with 20s, Warning

Just a little insight, but the diameter of the wheel has nothing to do with bending the rims. Years ago, I had 17" wheels on a Chevy fullsize truck, when 17's were just about the biggest wheel you could get. They were Budnik billet aluminum wheels with pretty low profile tires. I got a flat, and sure enough bent a wheel. I also had an accord on 18" Racing Hart's on 215/35's. I also bent these without getting a flat tire.

Basically it isn't the diamter of the wheel that matters. It is the profile of the tire coupled with other factors such as the strength of the rims.

With my current setup, I've hit some pretty big potholes and never sustained damage.

I just want to dispel the rumors that 20" wheels are the culprit concerning bent wheels. I see all sorts of posts with people getting 19's using the rationale that 20" rims are the problem.

If you don't know how to dodge potholes, stick with some gay high profile bubble tires. I'd rather bend an occassional rim than have fat sidewalls.

Re: People with 20s, Warning

I think i'm just getting old. My reflexes where slow to avoid what appeared to be a pot hole or puddle. It was raining and that's when I always hit potholes throughout my driving careerer. Crap happens. Oh well.
