All season tires going to be okay for snow?

I posted in someones thread in the tires/wheels section of the forum but didnt get much input there. Basically I'm starting to get worried about the upcoming winter and my current tires. I have an 05 RWD Sedan w/ sport package (235/45/18s and LSD) with about 60% tread left on the A/S Turanzas. Have any of you made it through winters without snow tires and just all seasons? I live in a suburb of Chicago so our winters can get bad at times, but usually the streets are cleared fairly fast, within a day of a big storm. I was debating whether or not to get another set of wheels and throw some blizzacks on there but just want to see if the A/S tires will do the job enough where i wont be getting stuck constantly. I know the LSD, the VDC, and of course common sense should help me this winter. This is my first RWD car, had it since June, so I may take it to an empty parking lot for the first snow and she how she handles. What do you guys think?

I live near DC and we only get a few snow storms a year. I find my car slipping and sliding all over the place in the snow... kinda fun, but kinda scary too. It really depends on how brave you are and fast you plan on going. Slow city driving on relativly clean roads should be fairly easy if you dont do anything stupid.

P.S. I have all seasons too

DaveB said he got around okay on his Turanzas but he's in Kansas. I'm in Seattle and I tried to run my worn out oem stockers and it was scary.

I run oem 19s and I just bought a set of 215-55-17 Blizzaks to put on my stockers. With having to transport my 2 yo daughter, I'm going dedicated snows.

I finally found that exact size after looking since last winter on Craigslist. $300 for all 4 w/ 80% tread. Not bad.

There a few guys selling their Blizzaks here. Check it out.

All season are ok in mild snow but no where as good as snow tires. With having a rwd car you will slip and slide enough as-is. I would get some good snow tires.

Get SNOW TIRES!!! Why would you be willing to compromise your safety by not getting snow tires. Snow tires are everything during winter conditions.

Well your X with all seasons won't save your @ss if you have to brake suddenly......that's where winter tires will save your butt.

++++++++++1 I ran my turanzas last winter and pretty much ruined my rears on the snow and ice. I just payed for a set of blizzaks to put on my stockers when I dont drive my pick up(which is a 1990 so its ok but I dont trust it completly).

I live in Canada the winter capital of the world.Drove with Turanzas last winter, but had respect for the roads and conditions(as always). Actually ran better with the VDC "off". If there was any freezing rain or slushy conditions though they were worthless, did figure 8's in the driveway... . I have excactly 30k on those tires and there done, down to the wear bar! For the winter this year(and from now on ) it's snow tires, when those merciless transports blow by you on the highway in bad conditions my heart would start pounding thinking they were gonna slide me off the road.Blizzaks for me then in the spring putting on Toyo Tourevo ls.Liked the Turanzas, not there durability though.

I haven't had any problems traversing 1" to 5" of snow with my RWD G35. In Kansas City, we have about 10 days a year where significant (2"+) is on the road. Hell, last year I made it home in the middle of an ice storm. The only place I've ever gotten stuck is trying to get up the driveway at my old house which had about 9-10" of snow on it. I use to have the crappy Turanzas and now I have Avon M550s. The M550s did quite well in the snow and offer a crapload more traction in the dry. Having VDC and ABS makes these cars easy to drive in the snow assuming you have decent tread left. I find driving this car is far easier to navigate in the snow than my old FWD 96 Maxima 5MT (non-ABS).

If you take your time and plan your trip accordingly, you'll do fine in the snow with A/S rubber. Make sure to carry some kitty litter just in case you do get stuck.

If you lived somewhere that got a lot of snow, then snow tires a necessary, but if you're only seeing a few days a year with snow and snow removal is good in your area, why waste the money? People in midwest are brainwashed into believing snow tires are needed for RWD....period. Funny thing though, I see all the cop cars in my area (crown vics and chargers) and they get around fine on Goodyear RSAs.
