Wheels - How do you decide?

I'm in the market for a new set of wheels. The issue I am facing however is that there are SO many different brands out there.

How does one, who really doesn't know about wheel quality (save for the obviously good wheels - ie. Volk, Work, etc) make the right decision?

I guess I just don't know where to start? I know what I want the wheel to look like but from there, where do you go? How do you decide? (I realized budget would be a factor of course).

I don't want a POS wheel, but I don't want to drop the $$ for the top of the line wheel either.

As for vendors - again, how did you decide for yourself? Do you always have to wait a long time? That's the other thing - I don't want to have to wait 6 months to get them.

Thanks for any assistance.

Might as well add the fact that I'd like to get a black wheel (maybe 5 or 6 spoke) with a polished or chrome lip.

I'm guessing you're thinking out loud and already know in your mind the answers to your own questions. . .however here's all the thoughts that have plagued me into missing out on rims that I wanted to get since I was so indecisive.

1: What is my goal? Looks/Performance?
2: How much do I want to spend?

First advice: pick a budget. Then match up some rims to your budget.
Second advice: how do you know "what's good"? Answer: read about the different production methods: forged, cast. Then read about one piece vs multi-piece. Research what companies use which method and why. Try and made an educated decision balancing weight vs. strength.
Lastly, look for a wheel that fits your criteria. Then get fed up, and start again in a month or two.
p.s. lastly: blow all your saved "wheel budget" on a supercharger.

personally i'd look for something with a forged hoop. I've had a set of good cast wheels (Works) before and bent two of them hitting pot holes. saving a few bucks up front will end up costing you in time and money in the long run. The forged wheels are much stronger then the cast wheels and to me that alone justifies the increased cost. I really didn't care about the weight issue, but strength is very important for a daily driver. Buying wheels is a style decision and way to personalize your car, make it stand out from the croud...that being said i look for something that is not too common, I don't want to drop big bucks only to make my car look like every other one on the road. Unfortunately that means staying away from the typical high end wheels like Volk, Works....since they are very common. Look for something from the likes of Iforged, DPE, HRE....you don't see too many of those around. In fact I haven't seen a single car (any make) around here with the same wheels I bought.
