Offset?

I know what each number of 245/40/18 means but what does offset mean to a rim? Is that the length from the axle to the rim or something like that? Thanks

The higher the number, the more tucked in the wheel will be.

Example: You find a wheel with a +28mm offset and it won't fit over the Brembos you need to go lower. You see a wheel you like with an offset of +23mm but you think it sticks our too much, you need to go higher.
