What is Offset?

Can someone please give me a quick explanation of what the term offset means and why I need to worry about it?

When I bought my first set of wheels, I didn't know what the relevance of offset was and now on the hunt for a new set, I still don't know.

My first set was

19x8 / 19x9.5 for wheels and my tires were 245/35/19 and 275/35/19 (or it might have been 275/30/19).

Does this offset term play into my wheel's search?

Thanks

More simply put, the lower the offset the farther out the wheels will sit. If you've got a high offset, then the wheels will be tucked. Generally, most people want aggressively low offsets.
