After Market Wheels - Tire Pressure Moniter??

hey,

WHAT DID YOU PEOPLE (WHO HAVE AFTERMARKET WHEELS) DO ABOUT YOUR TIRE PRESSURE MONITERS?
ARE SOME OF YOU JUST NOT USING THEM AT ALL?

i was told by infiniti that if i wanted to have aftermarket wheels on the car, i would have to either disassemble my stock wheels and take out the tire pressure moniters from there or buy a new tire pressure moniter (308 ea. x 4). is that what everyone else did when they got new wheels? isn't it bad for your tires/wheels to disassemble them several times? i think it would be pretty annoying to do that every winter and summer. can i get some assistance? i would really appreciate it.

*also infiniti told me that the tire pressure moniters might not work with some aftermarket wheels, is this true?

I think most people are just ignoring the little light that comes on on the dashboard.

I had the tire pressure sensors taken out from the valve stems of the stock wheels, and use the straps provided by the wheel manufacturer to band them to the new wheels. Everything is working fine so far. I still plan to rotate the new wheels with the stock ones, but I will not bother to put the sensors back on the stock wheels.

From what I understand and have read going to aftermarket wheels without the tire pressure monitor sensors will have no effect. The light on the dash doesn't even come on.

The light does come on after driving over an hour but shuts off the next time you start your car.

You have to take the tires off the stock wheels to take the tire sensors out.
The whole process of taking out the sensors, banding them to the new wheels,& mounting the wheels to the car took 1 1/2 hours to complete.
Usually, tires stores that also specialize in selling rims should be able to do it, just call around and ask to try to find an experienced one.

what if you get a flat tire and get the same exact tire again? is it hard to swap the sensor out?

I picked my car Sunday and the sameday I put my Iforged Swift on it and Have not seen the light yet. Maybe because I only had 50 miles on the car when I put the rims on. It is a 2004 6mt coupe.

Re: After Market Wheels - Tire Pressure Moniter??

I wonder if it would be cost prohibitive to just buy a new set and put it on the new wheels? I actually intend to get an aftermarket set for the summer (9 months) and put the stockers back on for the winter, for incliment weather.

Re: After Market Wheels - Tire Pressure Moniter??

Transmitter
REMOVAL
1. Deflate tire. Unscrew transmitter retaining nut and allow transmitter to fall into tire.
2. Gently bounce tire so that transmitter falls to bottom of tire.
Place on tire changing machine and break both tire beads
ensuring that the transmitter remains at the bottom of the tire.
3. Turn tire so that valve hole is at bottom and bounce so that
transmitter is near valve hole. Carefully lift tire onto turntable and
position valve hole (and transmitter) 270 degree from mounting/
dismounting head.
4. Lubricate tire well and remove first side of the tire. Reach inside
the tire and remove the transmitter.
INSTALLATION
1. Put first side of tire onto rim.
2. Mount transmitter on rim and tighten nut.

3. Place wheel on turntable of tire machine. Ensure that transmitter
is 270 degree from mounting head when second side of tire is
fitted.
NOTE:
Do not touch transmitter at mounting head.
4. Lubricate tire well and fit second side of tire as normal. Ensure that tire does not rotate relative to rim.
5. Inflate tire and fit to appropriate wheel position.

It's 61-72 inch pounds of torque for the nut holding it on.

I got this from the 2004.5 service manual.

2 out of the 5 shops I called knew how to do it. Sears was one of them. Gotta love Sears.

Re: After Market Wheels - Tire Pressure Moniter??

I have a second set of rims and tires (snows) for the winter. Didn't bother with the tire pressure monitoring for the second set. Once in awhile the light came on but quickly went off. I wouldn't worry about it! Save your cash!

Question 2002 SC430 Lexus has a nail in the tire

Also there is no valve stem sensor on this tire and the light is on. I suppose the light being on is no big deal. Sure scared me when I drove it. So I am finding out. My question is can any tire dealer fix this. I am worried that they won't know how to get the tire off the car to repair it. I don't know much about the mechanics of cars. I am trying to educate myself as I have made a big investment on the purchase of this vehicle. I do love it.
