Sedan 17inch Tire replacement

Would the 225/55/17 work well for the sedan? Would it be to small?

Re: Sedan 17inch Tire replacement

It's actually 1.6% bigger than the stock 215/55R17. At 60mph on the speedometer, you'll really be going 61. Not a big deal, and an excellent alternative size if you consider that you can get Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position or Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires in that size. (Both max performance summer tires.)

235/50R17 is nearly a dead-ringer for the stock diameter. You can get a Michelin Pilot Sport A/S in that size. A little more expensive, a little less dry performance, but probably the best all-around all-season tire you can find. Or for a cheap tire alternative, the Kumho ECSTA KH11 is also available in this size, and is a good choice if you drive the car like a daily commuter and not like a sports sedan.

Plenty of other choices in these sizes as well. tirerack.com offers a wide selection. This Tire Size Calculator will let you see how far off from stock various options are.

Re: Sedan 17inch Tire replacement

I considered the Kuhmo, and although these received pretty good reviews, I was a little apprehensive in choosing them. If I bought these and they didn't perform well in dry and wet traction, as well as appearance (I know, I'm shallow), I'd beat myself up everyday for going with the cheapest alternative. So I opted for the Falken Ziex ZE-512 in 225/55/17; I should receive them in a few days. I've used Falkens before and have always been pleased, so hopefully the Ziexs will work out too.

If you want to try Michelin Pilots A/Ss in 225/50 17 I'll sell you mine for $100 a tire. I have not had a chance to beat them up but I have some Toyos setting in my garag and need to get rid of the Pilots. The Toyos are wider that the reason for selling the Michys. They have about 9600 on them. PM me if you're interested. They are great in the wet. and fit on the stock rim no issues.

Re: Sedan 17inch Tire replacement

Well, the KH11 is a touring tire, not a high-performance tire. It's supposed to have better traction than the Bridgestone Turanza (the OEM touring tire for the G35), and at half the price.

The Kumho ECSTA MX is supposed to be a great summer tire, but it's not available in a decent size for the stock rims. For autocross, Kumho makes racing tires that go head-to-head with Hoosiers.

So, Kumho has the engineers to make great tires.. but the KH11 isn't a performance tire. It'd be like expecting the Turanza to handle well just because Bridgestone also makes Potenzas. Not to say that they don't handle well.. they're just in a different category than performance tires. Much quieter and more comfortable to drive on, though.

I'm just about ready to replace my original Turanza's, and haven't decided what to go with yet, myself.
