How do i know if I have TPMS?

How do i know if I have TPMS?
I have a 2003 G35 coupe 6MT w/ Brembos & Navigation. When I purchased the car, it had a set of winter wheels installed with winter tires. How do I know if those have the TPMS, or would they still be mounted to the factory 18s (which I also have)?

I am confused how to tell, as my understanding is that they are mounted inside the wheel, between the wheel and the tire.

Thanks

they're mounted around the rim inside the wheel. if you want to find out if you have it, remove some air from your tire and drive around. in a few seconds you'll notice [!] pop up on your dash.. meaning you are low on air

IIRC, it was added to the 2003.5 models with a few other updates (tweeks to the stereo crossover points, etc.)

They may have been an option for the coupes in '03 but they weren't standard

I believe my coupe has every possible option, so I will try the tip above, involving removing air from the tire and driving around to see if the light comes up.

At what PSI does the sensor trigger the warning indicator? 20psi?

Mine has triggered at a higher PSI than that... may have to do with individual sensor sensitivity, but I think some people have had it come on around 28 PSI

Okay sounds good, I will check around 25psi then...I definitely do not want to go too low on the OEM 19s.

Now, if the OEM 19s that I bought which were not original with the car do not have sensors installed, would the warning indicator stay on at all times, or off (if I had TPMS).

Regards,
Phil

If you don't have TPMS installed, the dealer told me the light will always be on. However, other members have said it goes off after a short drive.

If you had TPMS on the wheels and had it programmed by the dealer, it should function as if it were factory.

The TPMS was not standard on the 03 model year coupe.

It became a standard feature in 04.

The system works when it senses a drop in pressure of 2lbs or more on any one tire. Normally, the tire pressure for the coupe is around 33-36lbs.

You can tell if your car has the system by looking at the valve stems. If yours are the normal black rubber stem, then it doesn't have the system. The TPMS has aluminum valve stems and valve caps......
see below
