Ouch! Rim damage help

My lovely wife scraped a curb this morning ("I thought I just hit the rubber") and it has gouged about 1/4 of the rim diameter. Can a wheel shop or the dealer repair this? Idea of cost? What is a new rim worth?

Thanks

You let your wife drive your car? I love my wife and all but I have heard her say, "it wasn't my fault" far to many times to let her drive my car. I'll buy her a G if she wants but she will NEV EV EV EV EV EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER drive my G. Hell she should be happy I even let her in the thing. *wink*

if all that is damaged is the finish, and assuming you have the stock wheels, get some Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Coating in silver (5$ at Walmart), smooth out the rough spots, hold can about 8-10 inches from rim (mask off tire) and spray about 3 light coats. i PROMISE you will have a perfect wheel again. try it.

Re: Ouch! Rim damage help

I went to the local "we fixem rims shop" here in Memphis and they said they didn't do the stock 18" rims on the G (nor did they do a bucnch of Lexus or BMWs either) because the paint was like $350 a quart or something like that. He showed me where they had several layers of different colors of paint (silver, black, smoke, clear, etc.) and that they process was laborious and used very expensive type of paint (similar to the type of paint that changes colors depending on the light). He felt bad and suggested I get some silver or grey Testors that was close just to cover up the black that showed through.

Re: Ouch! Rim damage help

I messed up my front rim....and I had it repaired thru my dealer.....The charge was $150, but I was quite happy with the results.....They repaired the damage and repainted that area....I was able to cover the damage with a mix of Testors model paint, which matched quite well, but the deep cuts were too visible.....so I had it repaired.....check out the pic....the damage was from about 9:00 to 1:00 on the lip of the rim only......hope this helps

Re: Ouch! Rim damage help

most of these rim repair shops will not repair the 18's. like you mentioned, they cant match the color. i had my rim repaired also, luckily for me, the damage was on the inside of the rim. so the different color is not visible.

Re: Ouch! Rim damage help

msGcar, Thank You for your find on the paint!! I got mine at the Industry Walmart for $3.96. I have a Sedan with sport suspension wheels and the color match is right on the money. My curb rash wasn't that deep but still needed minor touch up, so results will vary.

Re: Ouch! Rim damage help

Best way would be to have a wheel shop polish the scratches out....Does your wheel have a clear coat? If so, you may have to polish and refinish the clear coat......

Re: Ouch! Rim damage help

I had bad damage on 2 of my wheels. I got them repaired this week at a place called Alloy Wheel Repair of New England. I was skeptical because I heard from others that the color was near impossible to match. They did a great job, I can't even see where they fixed the wheel. As good as new for $100 per wheel.

btw, they mentioned that the wheels have many coats of paint before the clear coat.

If you want a good DIY guide, there is one @ Autopia. Some guys repairs his Porsche wheel and it comes out awesome. Heres the link http://www.guidetodetailing.com/arti...p?articleId=30
I am going to do mine this weekend. I got some curb rash on the front 18's. Ill post up some pics of how they turn out.
