Hey guys,

I have an '04 Sedan and my right rear tire has significantly less tread than the front 2 (Falkens, 215/55/17s) and even the left rear tire.

So I was just going to replace the 2 rear tires. I'm looking at the Yokohama S Drives and was thinking I could get some 235/55/17s, but I was advised that I shouldn't go wider unless I want to go wider with all 4 tires. I might be open to that in the future, but it seems silly to replace the fronts when they're in good shape and while I COULD afford it, i'd prefer not to.

Thoughts?

Would putting 235s in the back cause problems?

Should i just get 215s for the rear and stay consistent?

As long as you come up with the same rolling circumference you should be fine.

Also tirerack has specs for each tire they sell. All tires are not created the same so even if they are both 235/55/17 each manufacture may have a different size.

 

I'd check with the TireRack but I doubt there would be a problem with the
235s if your rim is wide enough. TireRack can answer that question!

 

Thanks guys. Actually, Tirerack is who suggested I do all 4 tires as 235s, rather than just doing the rear tires as 215s. So I dont think it's an issue as far as them fitting correctly or they wouldn't have suggested I do all 4.

I just didn't know if people commonly use different width tires on front and rear or not? Basically, I'm just wondering if this is just Tire Rack trying to make some extra dough by suggesting i get all 4 tires, or if it really is important to have all 4 tires be the same width.

 

those look like the rare X rims...is your sedan all wheel drive?

If it's a RWD, you are fine with those sizes. With the X (AWD) I would change them all at the same time.

 

i have the s.drives and they are really nice. A bit noisy while turning because of the outside tread pattern. Very nice tire for the price.

95% of the time I leave it on.

 

ok.. because i had the exact same problem..
i started to slip VERY dangerously on turns when raining.. and found out that my passenger side rear was bald.. driver side was so,so and front ones were very good..
they were OEM Bridgestone.. but that's when I used to drive with VDC off 80% of the time..

 

Interesting. I've only had the car a few months, but I have 3 Eagle RS-As (2 rear and the spare, which has about the same tread as the right rear) and 2 Falkens that are in pretty good shape.

Did you replace all 4 tires or just the rear ones? Did you stay with the stock size?

 

i replaced all 4 to Yokohoma YK520 from America's Tire

I dont think I have the problem anymore, but i drive with VDC on 99.999999% of the time.

I think I had over 50k on the OEM tires, the front and one rear one was still good for another 10k or so, but the tires were getting too loud.
