Ghetto Wheel Rash Repair

Ghetto Wheel Rash Repair
Ok, if you don't want to spend $150 for a professional job, here's what you can do with $10. The stock 18" wheel when rashed, results in a black scar. All this does, in less than 2 minutes, is gets rid of the black and makes it somewhat tolerable. It's a GHETTO repair, so flamers keep that in mind.
Tamiya X11 is the paint I used, but Model Masters Aluminum works pretty good too. Just get a brush, shake, paint, walk away and keep your $150 and put it toward your new Cats or Plenum.
It covers minor rashes very well, and major rashes not so well, but better than a nasty black scar on the wheel.
FWIW. Results may vary.

Sanding will improve your results a great deal, but then it wouldn't be ghetto...it would just be urban. This is the total ghetto way. For an urban repair, get the spray paint, take off the wheel, mask it off, sand, and screw with it all day.

Much more tolerable at a distance. What was Infiniti thinking when they put those orange corners on? The clears look so much better!

Catatafish.....
I did almost the same thing to my front wheel as well......
I found a mix of Testors Silver Chrome and Anthracite metallic works very well....
Mix a small amout, (a drop at a time) of Anthracite metallic in with the Silver Chrome paint....It took me a little practice, but I got the color almost dead on.......
I finally broke down and sprung for the $150.00 I couldn't take looking at the scar, even though I got the paint to match.....

Re: Ghetto Wheel Rash Repair
Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Coating is what you want malx. You can get it at WalMart for $5. It will look very close if you are good at body work. I am not. I would have oversprayed and never got it to fade into the orginal color very well and it would have just made a scar a bigger scar. If you know what you're doing, give it a shot, remove the wheel, mask off the tire and remaining wheel and go fo it.
When I took it to our local "We fix em" wheel repair store, the guy told me that this wheel has several layers. A primer, some kind of black color, then a silver, then another silver, then a clear coat. The result is a very unique color. He said they don't even attempt it because the cost is prohibitive due to the paint costs. When I heard all this I just said screw it.
Many people have claimed good success with the Duplicolor paint. I just don't know what I'm doing with body work. When you sand it, it won't be level with the rest of the wheel...so you'll have to build it up if you want the paint to be flush with the non scarred area. This is why to do it right, it costs $150. Check out http://www.mobilewheelrepair.com if you'd like. They have a mobile truck that comes to local dealers and when I emailed them he referred me to the local franchise owner who may or may not come right to your house to do it. Good luck, and if you're successful, let me know how hard it was, maybe I'll get crazy and try it.
