Wider Tires on factory 19" wheels?
Wider Tires on factory 19" wheels?
Hi,
I'm looking to go a little wider just to prevent rim scapes. IMO Infinity made a big mistake putting a tire that's too narrow for the rim width.
Here is what Tire rack lists as optional sizes -
Original Equipment Front Size 225/40-19
Original Equipment Rear Size 245/40-19
Front Optional 19" 245/35-19
Rear Optional 19" 275/35-19
The cheapest listing on Tire Rack is the Kumho. These sizes would surely protect the rims against the typical curb bumps, right?
Thanks

There have been countless threads on tires for OEM 19's. Most people agree with going 245/35-19 for the fronts, but when it comes to the rears you'll see a variety of responses. The most popular response however seems to be 255/40-19 for the rears.
I don't think getting wider tires would prevent scraping your wheels. I'm pretty sure if your really wanna prevent from the wheel rash then you'd get more rubber on the tires rather than the 40 series. That would look funny though and probably affect your speedo.
I did some research on tirerack and even they list optional sizes -
Original Equipment Front Size 225/40-19
Original Equipment Rear Size 245/40-19
Front Optional 19" 245/35-19
Rear Optional 19" 275/35-19
I was curious what the stats comparison is (rear)-
245/40/19 = Diameter 26.7''
Section Width: 9.6''
275/35/19 = Diameter 26.6"
Section width 10.8"
So you gain more than an inch in width at the same diameter (speedo will not be off).
I have never had a car with 40 series tires but I've had plenty with 50 series and it wasn't really possible to scrape the rim as the tire was wider than the rim. In fact, many tires have a rubber lip near the rim that is marked "rim protector".
I don't know what the Infinity 19" rim width is, but it seems that they purposely put a slightly narrower tire than typical for that rim width to get a lower profile look. I see G35's with the passenger side 19" rims scraped to hell all the time but I don't see much of this on BMW's etc. I only have one small scrape but I'm always real nervous parallel parking
Of course you guys know more about aftermarket style rims than me but when new tire time comes, I'll probably still go with the larger sizes.
