Maximum Width on OEM wheels?

I need some help...
I have the 7 spoke OEM 18" wheels and a friend of mine has a set of brand new tires which he is giving me for dirt cheap. The only problem is that the tires are very wide, the front ones are 245/40 18 and the rear ones are 275/35 18...
I dont think that i should go larger than 245's in the back since the wider the tire the slower the car, the more gas i waste, can anyone tell me what is the max allowed width of the tire and how much difference would it make?
Thanks

what is the brand of the tire? find out the manufacturer, then go to the manufacturer's website and look up the specific tire and its size. it will state the min & max rim width.
