Winter Tires

I live in Omaha, Nebraska and need to buy some winter tires. Any suggestions? I'm looking at the new Michelin X-Ice Xi's.

For anyone that requires winter tires, how is the traction with the RWD sedans?

Wintertires on a RWD is better than M+S on a AWD.

Winter tires on an AWD is best if possible.

I did a pretty fair amount of research. I heard less than flattering things about the Michelin Xs.

I really wanted the Goodyear Performance Winter Eagle Ultra Grip GW3s, but they are hard to find and I could only find an EMT version available, which I have no interest in.

I hear the Blizzaks work extremely well with our cars, but they're kind of crazy expensive IMO and there's other very good choices available.

I ended up with the Dunlop Winter Sport M3s. They're in transit as we speak. Now just waiting til the weather gets cold enough to swap them over. I'll give an update once I've tested them out. I'm very interested in seeing how they perform as I live on a hill and have a crazy steep driveway. Should be fun! =)

Dunlop Winter Sport M3

I had a set of the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's on my 2004 GTO. As I have never had any other winter tires than these I have nothing to compare them to but taken on their own I thought they were pretty amazing. Several times I had to drive this car in the snow, including up to 5 inches, and never had any problems at all. I was worried that no matter what I put on the GTO it would be awful in snow but these tires got me through everything. I would highly recommend them.

Sort of similar question... I have an 05 g35x and also has snow package. If running all season decent or would be running snows be serious overkill... Then again.... Riding like you are on rails is better than sliding into a rail... guard rail that is

I think the general school of thought is, if you have an AWD/4WD (or x in this case) then a quality set of all seasons should be fine. If you are RWD then snows are best in an area like you or I live.

I have good quality all seasons on my AWD SUV (wife's daily driver) and we've never run into trouble. I moved from the Boston area to Salt Lake, so I've been through some pretty harsh winters over the last 5 years. I've always driven an Accord (FWD) with all seasons in the past, and it got around pretty well. I still take the SUV out on real bad days though (wife's a homemaker so she really doesn't have to drive anywhere typically). I've got performance snows for the G; this will be my first winter with RWD. I'm looking forward to it.
