Re: Hotchkis sways setting

To help understand fine tuning -----the rear of 90-96Q had 123 pound/in springs and no bar, options were 15.9mm [13 lb/in] or 20mm [40 lb/in] so the rear roll stiffness could be 123, 136, or 163 lb/in.
Now the rear sway bar sat in rubber bushings and had 4 rubber end link bushings so the 1st inch of body roll when from no bar to maybe 66% of the bar rated stiffness. Progressive engagement of bar stiffness meant in a 3" roll........no bar 369, 15.9mm bar = 395, 20mm bar=450.

So from base 369 in 3" to stiffest 450 is just 22% stiffer..[maybe 30% with partially stiffer bushings]....an aftermarket 24 mm bar was available [from Stillen] that when used with urethane instead of rubber got one to 650-675 pounds per 3 inches.

75% stiffer rear roll stiffness combining springs and bar.

The 3 bears conundrum always occurs finding what right for each situation.

The 22-30% wasn't enough and the next step 75% was way too stiff for the street [or typical bad highways] or rain

Why professional racing springs come in 25 lb/inch increments as standard values.

To get it right 5% adjustability is necessary, obviously a real challenge.........you may have to mix and match vendors.

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

A quick question. Are the OEM Coupe sways much stiffer than the OEM Sedan (non-sport) sway bars? Is it worthwhile going to them if I don't want the stiffness/ adjustability of the Hotchkis sways if I just want some improvement in handling and not affect the ride too much?

Thanks

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

All Zs and Gs regardless of trim levels share the same Front and Rear sway bars. Hope that helps.

So they'll do nothing for me. Thanks. I won't bother trying them then. I wasn't sure if they had different sways or not. Someone that did the Hotchkis offered me his coupe sways to try on my sedan.

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

I just got mine installed this last week. Went with Medium up front and soft in the rear. Works like a charm and I road race mine all the time. Handling is crips, yet not rough. Also turns in much nicer and settles quickly, hence a better feel when getting started in a corner.

My Opinion of course...

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

EustaJA, I just received my Hotchkis yesterday and plan to install very soon. Do you have a sedan or coupe? Also is it lowered? I got a sedan with TEIN coilovers and lowered, so just wondering if you have done something similar. I'm trying to figure out what setting to go when i install it. Thanks!

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

I am backwards to your dilema. I installed the hotchkis last week on a stock configuration(tires, rims, springs) and set it up medium/medium. It feels good so far, but I don't know what I need to set it up to once I install my TEIN H-TECHS this comming weekend?? Any ideas....

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

The H-tech springs are a lot softer in the rear then oem (they transfer 27% roll stiffness to the front) I'd drop the front bar to soft vs taking the rear bar to stiff.

Gsedan35, thanks for the advise. It sounds reasonable and logical and therefore I will try it.

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

Try setting it at soft at front and medium on the rear. You can adjust accordingly from there.

www.titanmotorsports.com/titanmotorsports/timo.html
Call titanmotorsports, they have the lowest known price on the bars. $250 shipped, but you have to call them as they are not listed on their web site.

ConceptZ has them for $274 shipped.

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

If medium stiffness is set at the middle hole, which ones correlate to the hard and soft settings?

Re: Hotchkis sways setting

the stiifer setting is alway the "shorter" moment arm position, ie hole closer to the bar.

Another note, you do not need to alway use the same hole on both sides, you can create intermediate stiffness settings by useing assymetric hole positions. So you really have >3 possible settings per bar. The manufacturer just hasn't posted the resultant rate change.
