Spring compression tool ??
Anyone come up with a good (safe) home made compression tool for changing strut springs?
I have a couple of ideas, but wondered if anyone has already done this.

damn it jsut rent one. they are free from the auto parts store as long as you bring it back in good condition. you just pay for it up front and they credit your money back afterwards.
makes it sooo much easier this way

the springs arent under that much tension...just wrap the spring/strut assembly in a big towel, and use an impact gun to take the nut all the way off. make sure the towel covers the whole spring, like a roll of paper towels, and extends over the top to absorb the force of the spring and the upper mount when it comes off. the suspense will kill you, but when the nut comes off, you will be glad you didn't waste your time with the spring compressor. the first time i used the compressor, and the second, third, and fourth i didn't.

Simplest tool to make is with;
- length of 3/8 all thead, nuts & washers
- shorter lenght of 1/2" rigid steel conduit
- two rigid steel one hole conduit clamps
(need 2 to pull evenly)
The unit is assembled by passing the allthread though the conduit.
then washers, then conduit clamps (hook shaped to latch the coils), then 3/8 nuts. Tape up parts that contact spring for protection.
Works like a clamp as you tighten the nuts.
Parts are less than a couple of bucks. If you know someone in the electrical bus. probably free.
