20" Rims Affecting Performance?

Alright, I've been reading pages upon pages on this forum and others about this topic, and I haven't really gotten a definitive answer. I really want to get some 20" Axis Shine's but the drop in performance is definitely a concern for me. Those with 20's, is it something I'm really going to notice? I have the 18" 7 spokes now. Would I be better off getting 19's or is there really much of a difference?

i wouldnt really say that 20's for normal daily driving and city driving is gonna affect performance but if u plan on racing it , it wouldnt be such a good idea to race with 20's with the mods u have

Define racing? I drive in a pretty spirited manner most of the time with some WOT a couple times daily (if I have to drive anywhere other than work, which is only 2 miles away and the engine doesn't get warmed up enough to flog it in that time). I don't go to the drag strip, and I am not going to be doing any "road racing" on a course or anything. Will I race somebody from a red light or something? Yeah from time to time. I usually only race up til about 60 and let off since I don't like tickets and anything more than that is considerably more dangerous.

I do plan to add some more mods, I'm definitely not done yet haha. I still need to get a spacer, intake, possibly some underdrive pulleys, probably some test pipes, and maybe get it tuned at some point after all that.

The weight of your wheels has more to do with performance than anything else. I have a set of Racing Harts, which are good quality wheels, but when I switch them out with my OEMs, I feel a definite increase in acceleration, not to mention the higher profile tires make all the bumps in a road a lot more tolerable.

I don't race my car so I happily put on my aftermarket wheels every spring, but I do it just for looks. I know that my car is probably more sluggish with them on since they're heavier but it frankly doesn't bother me since I don't race or take my car to the track. YMMV.

^^ i agree with that as well, something i forgot to throw in, if u can find some lightweight 20's then go for it but just find some nice 19s, sorry im more biased towards 20's unless the fitment is ****

Yeah I've been looking at some more pictures of 19's and they're starting to grow on me some too. As freaking stupid as this is, something about them being "20's" is appealing to me, LAME I know but hey, can't help who you are right? haha.

So, 19's plus a slight drop might be the ticket I'm looking for. Now I just need to decide if I want to go with something like Axis Shine, Super Hiro, or maybe something like the Tenzo Type M with red stripe

I just put on some axis matrix lastnite 20x9,10.5. Surprisingly they were not much heavier than my stock 17s maybe 3-5lb difference. When i took it for a spin the car did feel a lil sluggish and slower but after hitting the freeway it wasnt to bad. Doesnt the ecu resets itself to make up for change from the norm?

Wouldn't this only apply to mods like adding an intake, spacer, grounding kit, exhuast, HFCs, etc?

^^ Probably so, but i thought the ecu will adapt to things like rim size changes Anybody know and also will it reset your speedo to reflect the change?

from my understanding, as long as you get the correct diameter rim (larger rim, thinner tire) you don't have to worry about spedometer.. That's why if you get a 20" rim, you should get a 35-30 series tire for the rear and likewise for the front.. so you don't change the size of the wheel.. from taking off your stock 18s and having a 45 series tire..

As far as the ECU, wheels aren't a "performance" gain (and the aforementioned wheel size is the same) so there'd be no change.

you will notice a difference in performance, no matter what 20" wheels you purchase. Even 19", depending on what wheels you go with you will notice a difference.

OP, just go with 19's

Depends on weight period. But if you are coming from the oem 17s, good luck finding a whee/tire package in 20" that rivels the weight of the 17s.
